Hesed and Nephesh

by Louisa Hall
8/11/2009 / Poetry

Once upon a time, live a lover Hesed.
Who lived in a forest with His love Nephesh.

They loved one another in a world without pain.
They drank deep of each other as the earth drinks the rain.

Their hearts would never tire of the passion and the fire
and the world danced in time, to the beat of their desire.

Then one cold autumn day, after the last leaf had fallen,
the naked trees began to shiver in terror when they saw him.

He hid in the shadows and rasped to Nephesh,
an enticement, so alluring, that she walked in his steps.

When she realised what she had done, she escaped to Hesed
But enraged, he threw her out of their defiled wedding bed.

Isolated and alone, each consumed with their pain.
Nephesh and Hesed broke their hearts again and again.

Meanwhile, the enemy, overjoyed at his victory,
led Nephesh, his slave, into captivity.

She struggled and stumbled. Dirt streaked her face.
Occasionally her heart flickered with hope, but only ever in vain.

For darkness consumed her and she wasted away.
Her heart fell to shreds, as the blue sky turned to grey.

Hesed was impatient. He paced every day.
He was angry, she betrayed him. But what could he say?

He loved her, he would save her. He called to his friend:
"Moses, help me get Nephesh back again."

With Moses at his side, they earned a stunning victory.
Hesed wept with joy, leading Nephesh out of captivity.

At first she was tentative, she'd forgotten how to smile.
Hesed led her out into the desert, where they walked for many miles.

There they remembered their love and drew close again
until He led her at last, to the magnificent promised land.

There they shared some wonderful years, but soon it became clear.
That their time of serenity was going to disappear.

See, Nephesh had somehow changed, since that first tragic fall.
To hide guilt, doubt and shame, she had erected a wall.

Her heart was not free, to love as before.
So she thought she could escape through a new deceptive door.

When new lovers appeared, she leapt into their arms.
Donning gifts from Hesed, she seductively charmed.

She gave herself out, to new lovers every day.
Until one day, he found her, catching her in her shame.

Torn, he destroyed everything in the room.
He shook her, he said "how could you do"

Wrecked, they both cried. Defeated, Hesed sighed.
An enemy came to overtake the land and Hesed simply let her be taken captive again.

But while she was gone, it was finally known,
How she loved Hesed and would do anything to be home.

So returned to Hesed, with determination on her face
She would love Him, she be faithful! But alas, it was in vain

She could no more be faithful, than a child with forbidden sweets.
So she clung to her lovers, as a fish to the seas.

Hesed despised her unfaithfulness, but he kept bringing her home.
Then late one night, Nephesh came with a moan.

"Help me Hesed, I long to be true.
Please make it possible, for me to stay with you!"

Quick as a flash, he realised what had to be done.
"Wait for me Nephesh, and with that, He was gone."

Eagerly she waited, for many many years.
Until at last he returned to her, relieving all her fears.

In stunning new form, he bent down low.
He sacrificed His life, just so she'd know.

That she was everything to Him. Everything. Then finally she saw.
That He loved her. He loved her! And would forevermore.

"Hesed forgive me. How could I not have seen.
That this love that you have for me, goes beyond my wildest dreams."

They hugged and they cried, together at last.
"But there is much to be done" He looked into her eyes.

Nephesh nodded silently. Yes, her heart must be restored.
And everything repaired that had once been destroyed.

"I'll never leave you Nephesh, but this job is for you.
Be ready for our wedding, and I will be back soon."

"Yes" she agreed, and with that, He was gone.
But this time, hope filled her heart. A new love had dawned.

She toiled and she laboured, changing each day.
And each day she grew closer to seeing His face.

She was so eager, so desperate, He bided His time.
But eventually He returned. Coming a second time.

As they saw one another, tears filled their eyes.
They beheld one another, once again filled with fire.

They married that day. Hesed and His perfect Bride.
And he name her the Queen of the Kingdom of light.

The rivers clapped their hands and the seas did resound.
With the sound of singing at the love in the land.

And all was in unity. All was at peace.
All came to rest. All suffering ceased.

The heavens and Earth rejoiced in wild delight and joy
That a love so hideously broken, could be so gloriously restored.

That day, every dream was realised, every hope came to be.
Every question was answered and every captive set free.

The Earth exploded with light, glory covered each side.
Love spilled out everywhere, like a mighty ocean tide.

Hesed took Nephesh in his arms, contentedly they sighed
And lived happily ever after, Hesed and His bride.
