The Helper

by Sheila Dougal
1/27/2007 / Devotionals

Is there anyone who remembers, even God's own people, that He, in the fullness of His deity is a helper? Do we sing, "Our God is an awesome God" because He can move mountains, leap through time and read our minds, or because He submitted to human parents, obeyed hypocritical leaders, paid thieving taxes, and washed his own betrayers feet?

As a woman who believes in the power of submission, in the role of being a helper suited perfectly for my husband and a keeper of my own home, I can't stop singing the praises of the One who gave me a role in this life after His own image.

For years I numbly and religiously sang the words of praise only fitting for God, the supernatural God who made the entire universe with His spoken word and spans it between his thumb and his forefinger, who made the heavens more vast than I can begin to comprehend and the earth more complex than science will ever know. I praised Him coldly, in monotone, without any passion. Why? Was it because I didn't believe? No. I didn't sing the praises of my God with fire and joy because I didn't really know how hard it is as just a mere human to humbly be a helper. To, in faith, submit to someone you don't see eye to eye with. To patiently teach, and re-teach your children, who some days seem to get joy out of watching you sigh with exhaustion. To faithfully serve meals to grumbling toddlers, and unthankful adults. To without complaint, repeatedly wash the urine off the toilet lid for the oldest male in the house who happens to be 35.

It wasn't until I was in my prime, at my peak, full of ideas and dreams when I married and had children, that began to see who God really is in the peak of His power. It's a no-brainer to believe and sing about God being supernaturally powerful, that's what makes a god a god, isn't it? Shouldn't a god be able to say, "Wala!" and spin a universe out with the whisper of His mouth? Of course! The biggest minds of history have been trying to understand and explain away in human logic the miraculous acts attributed to God, but are they really that hard to explain? Isn't God supposed to do the miraculous? Isn't that what makes God different than us, that He's superhuman?

I propose that it's not the super-naturalness of God that we have a problem believing, if we believe there is a God at all, it's the humbleness, it's the servanthood, it's the willingness to submit, it's the helper God is which we just can't grasp. If a human shooting lasers with his eyes is miraculous, then God helping the human race in the humbleness of submission, all the way to a damned death is miraculous. God rose up His own Son on the third day from death, but that doesn't surprise me in terms of the capabilities of God as much as that He allowed Him to be dead at all. God was dead for three days! Does that knock our socks off? The true God, The Helper, is the ultimate unsung hero.
God is our helper, our servant, our willing support. That blows my mind! That makes me sing to the top of my lungs with joy, out of tune as it may be, "Our God is and Awesome God!"
