Contemporary Christmas Play - Wise Men

by Ken John
10/26/2009 / Skits and Plays

Scene 1

The stage is empty with a desert backdrop and a huge label: "Paris to Dakar Rally" on the wall. There is a very bright star in the evening sky. It is early evening; light enough to see the bright evening star as well as the empty "desert" stage.

1 Narrator 1: "At Christmas time, we remember that God clothed His Word in human flesh, on dusty old planet earth. In celebrating this unprecedented event, we also wait for history to prove God right; and, while we wait, we 'thank Him for all that is past, and trust Him for all thats to come'!"

Three rally drivers/dirt bike riders come onto stage, after a long day's ride. They build a fire and sit down to rest, warming their hands and looking up at the night sky.

2 Narrator 2: Three rally drivers, while competing in the Paris to Dakar rally, see some strange stars in the sky one night. They notice 'The Big Dipper' and 'The Southern Cross' gathering around a very bright star in the sky.

3 Driver 1: Hey, are you guys keen on watching the stars?

4 Driver 2: No, not me!

5 Driver3: Me neither!

6 Driver 1: OK, but look over there, that must be the Big Dipper, right? Look, it looks like a great big soup ladle!

7 Driver 2: Sure, even I can see that!

8 Driver 3: OK, if that's the Big Dipper, then that over there is the Southern Cross I suppose!

9 Driver 1: Uh, if I didn't know that's impossible, I'd say you were right!

10 Driver 2: But this is the Northern Hemisphere!

11 Driver 3: Oh Yeah! That's nothing! Look at that giant star over there, in the middle! Have you ever seen such a bright star?

Scene 2:

The drivers settle down and relax.

1 Narrator 1: When the riders see the bright star moving beckoningly across the night sky, they hurriedly decide to follow it!

2 Narrator 2: The star leads them to a highway truck-stop, just outside Bethlehem.

They stop near a restaurant, get off their bikes and walk over to speak to the truck-stop restaurant owner.

3 Narrator 3: They ask the restaurant owner of restaurant, about the star which is hanging low and extremely bright in the sky above his establishment. (The rally drivers enter the restaurant area where the owner is working behind a counter, and a small family is seated at a table near a window through which the star is visible.)

4 Driver 1: Hey, Hi there! Have you seen that bright star hanging in the sky just above your place?

5 Motel owner and Restaurateur: Sure, I saw it the first time it appeared, on the evening that a young couple arrived here, several months ago! It has come back every night ever since.

6 Driver 2: Oh! what was so special about this couple then?

7 Motel owner and Restaurateur: Well, she was so pregnant, they just couldn't go any further, and the baby was coming and arrived right here!

8 Driver 3: So what did you do?

9 Motel owner and Restaurateur: Well, since all the motel rooms were taken, I let them camp out in the truck-workshop out back!

10 Driver 1: What! Did she have the baby right their among the trucks and grease and spare tires!

11 Motel owner and Restaurateur: That's right! They made a bed in a spare wheel and wrapped the baby in cotton waste.

12 Driver 2: Have you noticed anything else unusual about the star?

13 Motel owner and Restaurateur: Well, it's so bright, and it hangs just above this place morning and evening! We've never been so well advertised before. We are doing great business!

14 Driver 3: I bet! And the young couple?

15 Motel owner and Restaurateur: They've been renting a room in the motel ever since!

16 Driver 1: Great, can we go 'n see them?

17 Motel owner and Restaurateur: Sure, well actually, that's them at that table over there!

Scene 3

The bikers go over and talk to Mary and Joseph and baby Jesus.

1 Driver 1: Hello, Do you mind if we sit down for a moment?

2 Joseph: Pull up some chairs, how can we help!

3 Driver 2: Oh, uh, ...we were just wondering about that incredibly bright star. You see, we were riding through the desert when we saw it moving.

4 Driver 3: Yes, and it came here, and so did we, and ... uh, he says its your star! (points to restaurateur)

5 Driver 1: That is, he said it arrived for the first time, when you did. We were wondering, ...Why?

6 Joseph: Its a long story!

7 Mary: Yes, it all started around the time I got engaged to marry Joseph.

8 Driver 3: Oh really.

9 Driver 1: How so?

10 Mary: It was after I joined the Church singing group, you know, a youth choir.

11 Joseph: Yes, we had just got engaged.

12 Mary: At the time I was so happy and I was so enjoying the singing... and one evening after choir practice, I saw an angel!

13 Driver 2: You mean Joseph?

14 Mary: (She shakes her head and waves her hand) No not Joseph! And he spoke to me and said I was going to have a baby!

15 Driver 2: And what did you say?

16 Mary: I said, "Surely not sir, That's honestly impossible, I haven't married Joseph yet, and we are still waiting patiently for the big day!"

17 Joseph: Yeah, and when I found out she was pregnant, I planned to break it off, until the angel came to me and told me, "No!, it's alright! Don't worry; what is conceived in her is from the Holy spirit! You should marry her anyway!"

18 Driver 2: But, what about the star?

19 Driver 1: Take it easy, give them a chance!

20 Mary: We don't know anything about the star, just that it's a King's star.

21 Driver 2: A king's star!

22 Joseph: Our scriptures say that a virgin will be with child and will have a son who will be called, "God with us!"

23 Mary: Yes, and the promise of scripture is that, "He will sit on the throne of heaven forever. And He will save his people from their sins."

The bikers look at the star and at the little boy and start to feel uncomfortable and stand up abruptly and try to show some respect.

24 Driver 1: Wow! we didn't imagine anything quite like this!

25 Driver 2: That explains why the stars are moving about in such unusual ways! So it's not a big publicity stunt for a film festival or something!

26 Driver 3: (bows a little bow to the baby boy) Well, we would like to be the first to greet you, Oh King!

The three bikers agree loudly and affirmatively.
They each remove an item of their gear and offer them as gifts to the child.

The bikers then shake hands with Mary and Joseph and bow their heads and high five Baby Jesus.
