Levi's Reward

by Sheila Dougal
2/02/2007 / Devotionals

Though there were still enemies to be driven out and land to be conquered, the Lord instructed Joshua to begin dividing up the land, giving the individual tribes of Israel their territory in the promised land. All the tribes had some defined land which was theirs and they were free and empowered by God's promise and presence to finish driving out the enemy and begin serving and worshipping freely in their own places. There's one tribe which didn't get any land of their own though, the Levites.

The Levites were the tribe God chose to use as ministers in the tabernacle, the meeting place of God, because they had been willing to face the hard task of dealing with their sin and their brethren's sin, they faced the rejection of their own to obey God, they feared God more than people.(Exodus 32:27-30, Deut.10:8-9)

Now as the Israelites finally settle into receiving the allotments for each tribe, only Levi doesn't get an allotment. You'd think this is a unfair dealing at first, until you read what the Lord records as Levis Reward.

"Only to the tribe of Levi he had given no inheritance; the sacrifices of the Lord God of Israel made by fire are their inheritance, as He said to them..." -Joshua 13:14

"But to the tribe of Levi Moses had given no inheritance; the Lord God of Israel was their inheritance, as He had said to them..."-Joshua 13:33

"And they gave no part to the Levites in the land, except cities to dwell in, with their common-lands for their livestock and their property."-Joshua 14:4

Things tested by fire, the LORD God himself, and cities throughout Israel. These are the rewards of Levi, the ministers of God to Israel.

It's the same reward for me and you, the Christian. 1 Peter 2:9 says, "But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light."

I'm not much of a country music fan, but there's a song from Garth Brooks which I really enjoy, some of the lyrics are:

There's this love that is burning
Deep in my soul
Constantly yearning to get out of control
Wanting to fly higher and higher
I can't abide
Standing outside the fire

Standing outside the fire
Standing outside the fire
Life is not tried, it is merely survived
If you're standing outside the fire

For us who fear God- loving Him and His ways, and loving the precious lives of people as He does, enough to take the risk of rejection and pain that God's word might be taught, and applied and the sin and stuff which tangles us up and bring's a bad reputation to God's name might be dealt with- the worldly pleasures, and riches are not our rewards, they just aren't enough. Only the fiery trials- which test our faith and increase us in being more like the God we serve (1 Peter 1:6-9)); the very presence of God Himself with us all day, everyday; and the spreading of ourselves out throughout cities all over the world; only these can bring us the "rest" we long for.

Our rest is soaring higher and higher in the Spirit as we wait on the Lord through the testing of our faith by trials of fire (Isa.40:31, 1 Peter 1:6-9), just being with Jesus, enjoying His presence with us always (Matt.28:20), and going into all the world making followers of Jesus everywhere (Matt.28:19).

I know, I'm experiencing this in my own life, and nothing compares. The high we all long for comes in going to the lowest, most rejected places with Jesus. It's unexplainable to the world, but for us who've tasted, we know that the Lord is good!
