Changing your Drinking Habits

by Kristin Hanley
11/18/2009 / Health

In a society that totes soda, coffee, and energy drinks as the beverages of choice, the importance of water has been overlooked. Days can go by before a person drinks unadulterated water. Its pure simplicity is what gives our bodies vitality. Sad to say, even water has been polluted by unnatural chemical additives to make it taste more "interesting" such as peach or raspberry flavored water. We are a culture slaved to our taste buds and caffeine additions.
Our bodies are composed of 70% water; stands to reason that water would need to be replaced daily. However, for most, we drown our organs in Red Bull, sweet tea, and 2% milk. But our insides need that daily cleansing. Imagine what our clothes would look like if we chose to start washing them in coffee and cream. Our whites would cease to be white and the fabric would take on a distinct and sour odor.
Despite the fact that our bodies have amazing coping powers, eventually our lifestyle will catch up with us. For some, changing all unhealthy consumption habits is difficult at best and overwhelming otherwise. But take the challenge to change at least one thing. Change your drinking habits. Replace the tea with water. Minimize your coffee intake. And eliminate soda completely; carbonated beverages possess absolutely no nutritional value. Try to work up to 80 ounces of water a daythat's about 10 glasses. Fill a jug with the exact measurement you wish to consume that day and then you won't have to worry about counting ounces. Or buy a 32 ounce cup and fill it twice daily. Whatever method you choose to use, down the water.
Be sure you do the majority of your drinking between meals. Excessive liquid consumption while eating inhibits proper digestion by diluting stomach acids. Keep your mealtime glass to 8 ounces or less. Some may argue that such a small amount will not quench thirst. However, when you drink adequate amounts of water between meals, you'll find yourself less thirsty during the mealtime.
Your eating habits may remain the same, but by changing your drinking choices, you will find yourself more energized, healthy and less bloated. Another perk to drinking plenty of water is a boosted metabolism, which will automatically help shed unwanted excess.
Happy drinking!
