A New Year and a New You

by Nancy Quinn
12/31/2009 / Devotionals

"Hmm, let's see. Lose weight, drink more water, and exercise more." Julie tapped her pencil on her journal. With the new year fast approaching, she felt obligated to record her annual new year's resolutions as she did every year. "I don't know why I bother doing this. I never seem to get past February with them." She sighed as she crumpled the paper and tossed it at the wastebasket. The paper ball gently met its mark and Julie put her chin in hands and thoughtfully began the list again.

Another brand new year; and with it, blank calendar pages of opportunities and the promise of the possibilities of a bright new year lay before you. A list of New Year's resolutions symbolize a promise to yourself to improve; to change into an even better you in the coming year.

While resolutions to make physical improvements in our lives such as losing weight or exercising more are wonderful standard fare on many people's lists, are spiritual changes on your list this year as well? The New Year's Eve celebrations are a wonderful time to celebrate the gift of the many blessings the Lord has given you over the past year, and is the perfect time to reflect over your spiritual life and ask the Lord what changes He'd like you to make in the coming year.

Our spiritual walk is a beautiful journey as the Lord walks beside us. He knows our strengths as well as our weaknesses. Try including some of those weaknesses you'd like the Lord to help you with in the coming year on your list of resolutions this year. Whether it's a weakness of the tongue, or simply a weakness you see in your prayer and Bible reading times, make a promise to yourself that you will draw closer to the Lord in the coming year. And that's the best resolution of all and one that holds eternal implications!

Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the plans I have for you," says the Lord. "They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope."

May God bless these words as I strive to encourage others in their walk with Christ. Please contact me if you would like to request a specific lesson that Lucy Mouse can teach your children or if you would like a coloring page to be sent to match the story!
