According To Him.....

by Shannon Heiden
1/07/2010 / Devotionals

Beautiful One, yesterday is gone, tomorrow has yet to arrive, here we are in today! Today, lets diminish the lies, cast off the regret, and determine in our hearts to be all we were created to be. Whether we win or lose in life does not matter. It's how we play the game that will define who we are!

I am amazed at the many expectations the New Years tempts us to bring. We tend to have the inclination to make new goals, and set a new standard for our lives at the beginning of a New Year more than at any other time. What fascinates me is that even though this can be a good thing, it also at the same time sets us up for failure.

You see, if we were unable to "work out" during the course of last year, even though it sounds great, and we feel invigorated by it, if we didn't have the discipline beforehand, what makes us think we will have it automatically, just because it's a New Year?

This of course is just one of many examples of how we can think and operate our daily lives. Oftentimes, we start out committed and excited, then life creeps in. Work, kids, bills, you know life! Slowly and unintentionally we start to wain from our commitment. It's as if we think somehow we will attain our desires because we set out to do them. But usually, if we weren't doing something small in that direction beforehand all along, the odds of us sticking to a new routine are slim to none.

Beautiful One, I'm not saying don't try a new thing. Absolutely try it, condition yourself repeatedly to do whatever it is you desire. Start small then build upon it. We need goals, we need fresh perspective in our lives.

But what we need more than anything, is a regenerated mind. A mind free of worry and doubt. A mind that is at peace with God, so in return we will have peace within ourselves. In order for us to embrace a new beginning, we need to rid our hearts and our minds of all the old things. Today is a new day, the things that worked for you or against you are old. God has something new to lay hold of and we simply cannot embrace it if our minds are already full.

When God brought Israel out of Egypt, He didn't take them immediately into a new and better place. He knew that their minds needed to follow their physical freedom or they would taint all the blessing He had in store for them.

I don't know about you, but last year was a very hard year. I feel as if a lot was lost in my life. I'm almost afraid to have great expectations for this one, being that thats exactly how I felt at the beginning of last year, and it hardly turned out the way I thought.

Beautiful One, what do we do when faced with a new day, a new beginning but, with an old perception? It's true that we don't know what tomorrow may bring, but we are confident in what yesterday brought. And usually, yesterday determines how we feel about today because we're familiar with it. No matter how good or bad it felt, yesterday is a for sure thing in our lives.

The thing we need to remember is that yesterday doesn't determine the outcome for today. That's good news to those of us who have been wounded. Its especially good news to those whose hearts are broken, and have lost their way. This year I want to explore a few words like Trust, Determination and Purpose just to name a few. What do they really mean? If we can gain understanding, then maybe we will be able to see more clearly how the issues of life play a role in either defining our faith, or destroying it.

Whether we are aware of it or not, each of us lives our lives after a certain pattern of thought. Each of us has desires and dreams, as well as weakness and vulnerabilities. We each hold a set of principles and values in which we hold others and ourselves accountable to. Let's examine them, lets seek out that which defines and shapes our lives. This year I want to challenge you as I have myself to live intentionally. No matter what it is you do, do it intentionally and specifically. The Word of God says "lean not on your own understanding, but in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your path." (Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV)

Did you catch that? In all your ways, acknowledge Him. God didn't say in all your right or holy ways, He said in all your ways. All means the good, the bad, and the ugly!

I encourage you to join me in acknowledging God together in the issues of life, no matter what they are. There is no question without an answer, no problem without a solution, and there is no voice we need more than His voice ringing in our ears.

According to the world-we are masters of our fate. Every man for himself. But according to Him; we shall lean not on our own understanding but in all our ways, we shall acknowledge the one and only true God, and He shall direct our paths in 2010!

Beautiful One, just believe, because according to Him, nothing shall be impossible for those who do!
