A Listening People

by willetta pilcher

Mk 9:7 Then a cloud appeared and enveloped them, and a voice came from the cloud: "This is m Son, whom I love. Listen to him! Jn 10:25-28 "Jesus answered, "I did tell you, but you do not believe. The miracles I do in my Father's name speak for me, but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand."

Listening to Jesus and the inner voice of the Holy Spirit is the mark of a true believer. Jn 14:16 "The Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you." God has given us a Spirit Guide if you please. Not like the world offers which is demonic in nature but the Holy Spirit, His Spirit. He has given Him to us to guide us through life and to help us make wise decisions. This Spirit guide is available only to believers, But it requires believers to listen to His voice.

I hear people make the remark, "I'm saved so I can do or say anything I want to and I'm still saved." That statement shows a great deal of ignorance concerning scripture, what is expected, and the marks of a true believer. The statement is also one of personal independence. That is not the attitude of the true believer. Mt 18:2-4 "He called a little child and had him stand among them. And he said: "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven." Mt 23:12 "For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted."

Listening is sometimes difficult, especially when there is so much noise going on around us. One must be quiet. The clatter of the outside world must be silenced or at least shut out. Otherwise the still small voice within will be drowned out and missed. I've found that after I've asked for wisdom and/or direction, I need to stay open to His voice. If I try overly hard to hear his voice, my own opinions get in the road. But if I go about my duties expecting to be given direction it will be dropped into my heart and I will know because I know that it is from Him.

A thought just occurred to me. Why do we as Americans hate silence? Just ask a crowd for silence and listen to the noise. Or listen to a conversation. If a slight pause occurs someone takes it upon themselves to fill the silence even if it is totally boring or off the subject. Or try being home alone with nothing to hear but yourself breathe (and of course the furnace, dishwasher, and the humidifier etc). We find silence hard to come by. No wonder our nerves are on edge.

The world around us demands us to listen. God asks us to listen. He gives us a choice! God respects our decision. Should we not respect His desire as believers?
