How to Prove the Existence of God

by Greg Baker
2/01/2010 / Christian Apologetics

If you are a Christian, then there has been a time when you have been frustrated trying to prove that God does indeed exist to someone who doesn't believe it. Even presenting solid evidence and historical examples does nothing to convince the gainsayer. Fact does not equal truth. Two people can take the same fact and declare different truths. For example, the atheist will point to the fossil record as evidence of evolution. And a knowledgeable Christian will also point to the same record as evidence of creation and the existence of God. Take the same fact and you get different truths.

This is why trying to prove that God exists in a debate is foolhardy. You can never change the mind of someone whose mind is already made up. That goes both ways. The atheist cannot convince me, and I can not convince him. You can never transfer your faith to another individual. I lack the faith to believe in evolution, a concept that appears ridiculous to the extreme with such far fetched theories that I often laugh at what I consider absurdities that defy logic, reason, and science. The atheist reacts exactly the same way towards God and religion. They have faith in evolution, I do not. I have faith in God, and they do not. Neither of us will be able to transfer that faith to the other.

So is there a fail proof way to prove the existence of God? The answer is both yes and no. The Bible tells us that the Heavens declare His handiwork. Yet many people choose to ignore what it points to and choose to interpret it in a way that seems, to them, to prove that God doesn't exist. This goes back to my previous argument.

Part of the problem is perspective. Since I like chess, take a chess game by way of illustration. If your game were wrapped up only in the perspective of the individual pieces on the board instead of the entire game, both your own and your opponents, you will lose badly. Individual pieces are limited to what they can do and see. A bishop, for example, might be in danger, but if he moves out of danger the game could be lost. Still, the bishop doesn't can only see its own perspective and that perspective tells it to move out of danger.

Many people can not believe in God, or will not, because they can not stuff God into a test tube, quantify Him, experiment with Him, or examine Him. Since they lack this ability--as the bishop lacks the same ability in a chess game--they refuse to believe in God. They want a limited type of tangible proof that would fit their understanding of the universe (or the chess game). And if it does not fit their perspective they will dismiss God out of hand.

Proof of God exists. But from the perspective of the individual it does not fit their understanding so they refuse to see it as proof. That is the problem. We must change a persons understanding of the game, so to speak, so that proof will be understood and accepted.

PROVING GOD'S EXISTENCE

I have discovered only one way to do this. Instead of arguing with an individual, I issue a challenge. The challenge is to come to Church. But not just to come for the sake of merely having a physical presence. But to come and experience the entire thing we call Church. I challenge them to come Sunday morning and night, for two solid months. To listen, and consider and ask questions. You see the Bible says that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. I believe that if a person is honestly hearing the Word of God, faith will blossom in their soul. For the few who have taken me up on the challenge it has been successful.

I've had a few atheists actually take up the challenge. Every one of them has become a believer. In fact, one is now my Youth Pastor. When I first met him we argued a bit about the existence of God. Neither of us made much headway. So I challenged him to come and give it a legitimate try. Not like he did when he was a kid, but an honest effort to put the Biblical principles to the test in his own life.

That is where all Christians become true believers. At some point you have to believe in God for your own reasons not because your parents do or your pastor does. When a person lives the principles of the Bible everything then changes. I've watched it happen. I know it happens.

So if you are wondering how to find out if God exists or not, you can. Find a good Bible believing Church and begin to live the principles and truths that are taught from God's Word. Seeing for yourself how the principles work in your life and how they transform your thinking helps you develop faith over a very short period of time. You'll begin to see the hand of God and the proof of God all around you.

I can't go without a day, seemingly, without God demonstrating His existence to me in some unusual and very real way. Anyone who experiences this, knows there is a God. But it isn't something that I can transfer through words. This article won't change anyone's opinion. But if you are an atheist and you are sincere in your willingness to at least give it a shot, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Most atheists still won't take the challenge. I can't do anything about that. But it does give me the high ground. If they won't actually try it, they can't argue against it. There are three basic reasons why a nonbeliever won't take the challenge.

1. Because they got hurt by Christianity somewhere in the past. This is unfortunate, but let me say that it wasn't God or Christ that hurt you. It was a sinner that hurt you. Shame on them, and I beg your forgiveness on their behalf. But a follower of Christ is not a follower of a man. Give Christ a try even if you aren't willing to give religion a try.

2. Because they love their lifestyle and aren't interested in anything that will challenge it. This, I'm afraid, is the majority of atheists. They live a certain way, are comfortable with that lifestyle, and they know that if they came to Christ that lifestyle will be challenged. They don't want their world shaken up. No one likes to be told that what they are doing is wrong. God is seen as a dictatorial authoritarian instead of a loving God who sent Jesus Christ to die for them. These will rarely, if ever, take up my challenge. They have no interest in discovering if God really exists or not. Because if He did, then their entire worldview would be shaken. Few people are willing to risk that.

3. Because they are genuinely confused. They would believe if someone could prove it. They aren't hindered by a lifestyle, but by ignorance and confusion. These will often take up my challenge if they have a real interest in discovering if God is real or not.

You can prove God's existence by putting His Word to the test in your own life. God will verify the truth of it to you in a way that will utterly convince you. So, if you are an atheist reading this, I dare you to take up my challenge. Find a good Bible believing Church and attend it with an open mind and heart. Ask plenty of questions, attempt to live the principles and truths taught, and do so for two months. If at the end of that time, you still disbelieve, then I'll concede the battle to you.
