CALCULATING THE GOD OF DIMENSION

by Rebecca O'Connor

Once upon a time there was a race of flat people who lived flat lives in the town of Flatland. They had flat jobs to buy their flat homes and raise flat families. They had learned to move from side to side in their Flatland in order to work at their flat jobs. The history of their people tells the story of how someone discovered the movement of side to side. That was when they progressed into the second dimension. They were quite satisfied in their second dimension for they knew of no other way to exist.

One day, however, Flatis Enochis had an unusual happening. The Spirit of Up and Down, which was also the God of the Flatlanders, tried to make communication with the them. The only problem was that Flatlanders could not comprehend anything outside of the first and second dimension. As the Spirit of Up tried to introduce Himself to Flatis Enochis only the flat bottom part of Him could be seen and the Spirit of Up was quite unrecognizable. Flatis Enochis wondered if he was quite mad to have this strange occurrence. What would the other Flatlanders think of him?

The Spirit of Up, who is also God, picked Flatis Enochis upward. Flatis floated above his flat home and looked down upon his flat neighbors. All of the Flatlanders gather 'round wondering where Flatis Enochis had gone, and this, my friends, was the birth of the third dimension of up and down.

Even though the many people left their flatness to become Cubes, their thinking was still mostly flat, and they were always afraid of falling off the edge of their flat world. As with most history, it repeats itself. Now the Cubes could not only go from side to side but up and down. They lived their cubed lives raising their cubed families on the pay they earned working in their cubicles. They were contented to live as Cubes and seldom if ever thought outside of the box. They thought in the box and worshiped in the box because they had boxed their God to fit their image.

God, who was the same as the Spirit of Up, tried to communicate with his Cubes, just as He had the Flatlanders, but they did not understand Him either. There were some like Abracube, Isaacube, and Jacube who had told the people what they had perceived from this boxed God. Finally God got the attention of a Cube named Mosecube when he appeared as a bush that burned. No matter how God tried, He could not get the Cubes to understand Him very well, and if they could not understand their God, they would never know themselves.

"If only I could be one of the Cubes, I could show them the way, and they would understand," God said to Himself. So God planted Himself in one of the Cubes and was modestly born. He looked like all the other Cubes, although to my thinking He must have been remarkably good. It was never written in history that much was thought of Him as anything more than ordinary growing up. When He reached His appointed time He began to live outside of the box. He could command the winds to stop blowing, and the sea waves to be still from their roar, but when He defied the laws of gravity and walked upon the sea no one knew what to think. They knew side to side and up and down but this was not a dimension they could grasp. Still, they followed Him to see what He would do next. His Words and deeds made them believe Him, though they did not understand.

Many of the Flatlanders who became Cubes now realized they were Spirits born anew into the fourth dimension's possibilities. God told them that they could do more than go from side to side or up and down. There were no more limits to what they could do if only they could imagine it. Time and distance could not hold them bound any longer.

Now, there was the Society of Cubes who refused to live outside the box, nor could they tolerate for the other Cubes to enlarge their borders. "Why, what new dimension is this?" they questioned. "Cubes will never fly past time and sound," they said. "We must make sure that the Cubes stay grounded within their walls," they declared. The Society of Cubes feared what they could not grasp, so they set about to kill it. The only problem was in making the God Cube stay dead. The God Cube lived beyond the third dimension and kept materializing.

It has been over two thousand years since God showed us the way, yet the Flatlanders and the Cubes have managed to survive all Truth and stay just as they were. You would think they would have become extinct but they live on. I wonder if they will ever make it into the fourth dimension of God for the days ahead? Can you just imagine a day when those who have converted into the new dimension will vanish to be with God? It makes me wonder if the Flatlanders and Cubes will even notice that they are left behind.
