Unqualified Seclusion
Larry L. Armstrong

READ: Mark 15:33-41

And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?"which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" Mark 15:34 (NIV)

"Sometimes I get so lonely I could scream," said actress Inger Stevens, who later committed suicide. Death and loneliness have often been associated.

Dying on account of human sin, Jesus endured more than physical torture. He was taunted by passersby, chief priests and teachers of the law. Even the men on the other crosses insulted him. Is it surprising he eventually came to this cry of dereliction?

Many lonely people wonder if God abandoned them. Surely, Jesus, who was so intimate with his heavenly Father, felt isolated from him as he endured crucifixion. The memory of Psalm 22:1 raised from his lips the question, "Why am I completely alone? Why has the Father left me, too?"

This wasn't a complaint, but a lament over the weight of humanity's sin. Jesus was deserted. The utter solitude of death is the penalty for sin. Being the only person ever asked to carry such a burden, Jesus voiced his plaintive agony: "My God, why have you forsaken me?" He died in unqualified seclusion, cut off from the Father as you would've been.

Death either takes you into God's presence, or it yanks you fully out of it. Faith or lack of it determines your destiny. Do you believe Jesus died to remove the penalty for your transgression? Or do you think you can get into God's grace another way? Be careful! The answer determines how lonely your eternity will be.

TODAY'S QUOTE: "At the wall of the world stands God with His arms outstretched," David Jeremiah said, "and when a man or woman is driven there, the consolations of Jesus Christ are given."

THOUGHT FOR LIVING: I won't suffer the isolation Jesus suffered if I accept that he died for me.

PRAYER: Lord Jesus, I'm sorry you were abandoned because of my sin, but you loved me enough to endure until resurrected. I accept your gift of salvation with sincere faith. Amen.
