Help!

"I lift up my eyes to the hills where does my help come from?
My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth."
- Psalm 121:1-2 (NIV)

Something happens to children right around 5pm every day. A friend of mine calls it "happy hour". While that title would make you think everything is wonderful, it actually refers to the intoxicated, uncontrollable state our toddlers enter. No matter what kind of day we have had to that point, everything immediately unravels. Somewhere in the minds of these little ones an alarm sounds telling them it's time to go crazy. My two-year-old begins whining incessantly about nothing and everything while my 15-month-old takes to destroying any semblance of order and neatness in our home. Of course, this all happens right when I need to be fixing dinner and taking care of last minute chores before their dad gets home.

As happy hour begins, so does my countdown. "Only fifty-six minutes until Rick gets home." Having been alone with two toddlers all day, I am near the end of my strength, my patience and my sanity. Within the hour I will have someone to help me and, better yet, some adult conversation! Relief is only moments away. I can see it and I can't wait.

On the occasional night Rick must work late, my relief does not come. Sometimes it goes well, but other times happy hour lasts all night long. My husband returns to an unkempt, chaotic home and a frustrated, frazzled wife. I fully understand his job; the importance and necessity of it. I even respect and support his need to work late. Yet, in spite of myself, I grumble under my breath, "He should be here to help me! I need help. I cannot do this alone!"

Do you see the misplaced trust? I have put my trust and faith in my husband instead of in my God and King. I begin counting the moments and waiting until my relief, my savior, comes home. This is not right. As wonderful as he may be (and he certainly is!), my husband will never be perfect. He will never be all-powerful or infinitely wise. He is human. My trust and faith must be in God first.

This is not to say that my husband never needs to help or that I never need human relief. Rather, instead of getting frustrated with my husband or his job, instead of becoming passive aggressive upon his return or venting to friends, I must call out to God for help. I must look to the hills not the train station.

My help comes from the Maker of heaven and earth. When I properly recognize this, I can rest in His sovereignty because He is all-powerful. He is infinitely wise. He is perfect. He is everything Rick cannot be and more. He is always available. I don't have to wait for happy hour to end before accessing this Source of help. As His children, we can call out anytime day or night, and He will help us.

Are you seeking His help? Or are you placing your first trust in someone else? God does not want to be our last resort, sought only in times of desperation. He wants to be our constant Source of help. He wants to be our Strength and our Guide. Consider ways to tap into God's power each day. With His help we can survive and even enjoy the happy hours of our lives.

Thank you, Father, for your grace and patience. Forgive us for misplacing our trust. Forgive us for seeking help from others before You. You alone are our perfect Help. Please keep us mindful of this truth. We ask You to lift up our eyes when we are too weak or stubborn to do it ourselves. Help us to seek You first.
