We Can Find a Way

by Jerry Ousley

I've often said that when we really want to do something we will find a way to do it. There have been many times that I really wanted something, or had somewhere I wanted to go. But, as with many of us, often the one thing blocking my desire was money. Having the funds to accomplish what we want to do can be a very big challenge at times. But when we really, really, really desire whatever it is, we can usually find a way around it.

We have always been toward the lower end of middle class. When one is in that position it means they pay all the taxes, foot the bill for those considered beneath middle class, and still never seem to have enough to go around. But somehow, even in this position, we managed to get both our children through school, help pay for their college education, sent them both on a trip (through their high school) to France, and many other things like graduation expenses and wedding expenses. When one adds all that up it comes to a small fortune. We didn't really have it but we wanted to do it so somehow we found the money to make it happen (through our mortgage, I might add, we are still paying for some of that expense!).

Of course our kids had to do some sacrificing too. For instance, our son had to take out some student loans in order to finish college and when he graduated he had a hefty bill to pay himself. But the fact of the matter is, he wanted to do it and he found a way.

We owned a 1985 Oldsmobile at one time. It was a great car and we basically wore it out. When we finally sold it (and yes, we did manage to sell it even in the shape it was in) it had a few "modifications" that we had added. For instance, the radiator fan quit working. As long as I was driving down the road the air moving over the engine was just enough to keep it from overheating. But when you had to sit still and let it idle, well, it didn't take long for that red light in the dashboard to come on, indicating that it was getting too hot. I was told that the sensor that made the fan kick on had gone out. I dutifully purchased the sensor at the auto parts store and painfully put it in. But it still didn't work.

There were a couple of people I knew that had a lot of knowledge about such things and they couldn't figure it out either. At the time I didn't have the money to put it in the shop and so I had to find a way to make it work. My "backyard mechanical" idea was to wire a light switch from the fan directly to the battery. I mounted the light switch to the dashboard (and yes, it was in an electrical box and looked like a light switch in your home). When I climbed in the car and started it, I merely flipped the light switch and the fan came on. Problem solved except for this strange looking switch mounted up on the dashboard! Hey, don't criticize me it may not have looked the best in the world but it worked and only cost me around fifteen bucks for the fix!

We will find a way. Luke 5:19 tells us how a group of men found a way to get what they needed. Their friend was paralyzed. They had heard of Jesus and how He healed the sick. When they found out that He was in a house preaching and healing the sick the four of them put their friend on a cot (much like a hammock) and carried him to see Jesus. But the crowd was so thick they couldn't get in. So they climbed up on the roof of the house, removed enough of the tiling for their friend to fit through and lowered him down, right in front of Jesus. In short, Jesus not only healed their friend but also forgave him of his sin! They found a way because that was what they really wanted.

The point is that if we want to come to the Lord we will find a way. Many have given a host of excuses as to why they don't come to Christ. Some say that they will make a decision some day. Let's be honest here; if a person really wants Christ in their life, they will find a way. No sacrifice is too great for what we really want. We have proven it over and over again. If you want to do something for the Lord and it is the desire of your heart, coupled with prayer, you will find a way. So be honest with yourself. If you haven't found a way perhaps you really don't want to do it. But those things we want to do, we will find a way.
