Let My People Go
by Nellie Shani
4/21/2010 / Poetry
Indeed twas a terrible night
Over all of Egypt not a drop of light
For Moses had asked of Pharaoh
Release of Israel from sorrow
His heart God had hardened
Of his stubbornness all were saddened
Like an iron box under lock and key
His unswerving position all could see
Moses staff became a snake
A powerful miracle for Israel's sake
Frogs gnats and flies galore
Jumping and flying within their doors
Let my people go
All this sorrow you can forgo
To worship me on mount Sinai
This my holy cry
On that fateful dark night
The angel of death did alight
Looked for blood on the doorposts
Without it a terrible cost
Bitter cries rent the air
Firstborn's death they could not bear
A dark cloud visited their homes
Etching sorrow right to the bones
From the heir to the throne
To poor wanderers without a home
An epitaph was written
For the firstborns death had smitten
