Response to "Evolution Sunday"

by JJ Jones
2/18/2007 / Christian Living

Sunday, February 11th, was declared "Evolution Sunday" by 10,000 ministers and clergy across the United States to show that science and the Bible are, in fact, compatible. No problems so far, until you get to the Letter that these 10,000 ministers and clergymen have signed stating that the theory of evolution "is a foundational scientific truth" and "to reject this truth or to treat it as 'one theory among others' is to deliberately embrace scientific ignorance and transmit such ignorance to our children."

Folks, I'm here to tell you, it matters 100% what you believe.

Do you believe that all God's words are true, and his righteous laws are forever (Psalm 119:60)?

Do you trust the Lord with all you heart and lean not on your own understanding (Proverbs 3:5)?

Is the Bible living and active, sharper than any double-edged sword and penetrating to the spirit (Hebrews 4:12)?

Or is the Bible just a good book to live by? Is church just a social gathering? Did God come down, do some stuff here and there but we can't really know what he meant or did/didn't do?

If you don't believe Genesis 1:1, how can you believe John 3:16?

If you believe God used evolution... when was the first being worthy to be called "Adam?" Or "Eve?"

If what we call sin is really a byproduct of our animal nature and residual DNA, then what did Jesus really die for on the cross? In that case, does it even matter that He died?

Evolution is just a theory. Let me rephrase: evolution in the context that life went from single-cell organisms to the complex humans and animals we have now is just a theory. It cannot be proven. No one has ever taken single-cell organisms, combined them in the lab for millions of years and produced a human or animal. This can NEVER be tested in a lab.

Animals adapt, yes. The fittest and most suited survive, yes. These traits are passed down, yes. But you know what? A longer-necked turtle is still just a turtle. A dog with a heavier coat is still just a dog. Over time, the animals adapted but did not become something new. Don't be fooled.

Jesus quoted the writings of Moses many, many times to His listeners. He believed they were true. Not just "kinda" true or could be "construed" as true. They were true to Him.

Why aren't they true for so many of us?

"Well, science has proven this... and science has proven that..."

No, it hasn't. It has the best possible explanation a group of men who don't believe in God can come up with for the origin of life. Hint: if they don't believe in God personally, they're not going to look for ways to prove He exists, now are they?

"This is what science has proven. They say it's a fact. We don't want to look stupid or have our children look stupid..."

Again, since sadly Christians are the minority, "our" (meaning collective humanity) understanding is that man evolved from single-cell organisms. Proverbs 3:5 tells us to look somewhere else for understanding.

And as far as the "looking stupid" thing, well, Jesus told us in Matthew 10:22, Mark 13:13, Luke 21:17, and John 15:18: we will be hated for following Christ. We will be persecuted (Matthew 24:9). But we must, we MUST stand to the end.

We are told by Paul to "test the spirits" to see if they confess Christ is the Lord, for "many false prophets have gone out into the world" (1 John 4:1). We are also told further down in verses 5 and 6 that these false prophets "are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood."

WE ARE GOING TO BE RIDICULED FOR STANDING UP FOR JESUS CHRIST!

I'm sorry, but if something a scientist says casts doubt on God or the veracity of the Bible, then for us as Christians, he is wrong. Plain and simple. We are told in 1 Peter 3:15 to be prepared to defend our faith. So it is our duty to seek out resources, to read, and to learn about what the Bible says on creation. To find the scientific facts that support it and give not only defense, but defeat their arguments. 2 Cor 10:5 says "we demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God."

And you know what? Such facts are out there.

We cannot compromise. We CANNOT compromise. How can we tell our children the same book that's the living, breathing word of God is also wrong and not telling the whole account of how everything began?

It matters what you believe.
