Would They Pass Him By?

by Tracy Finney
2/19/2007 / Short Stories

"Hey Stan, I'm really hungry. I can't believe we're still here and no one has given us a
bite of food. Maybe we should consider changing our location," muttered Huey with his
voice quivering. "Are you cold? I'm freezing! Maybe we should move south."

"Huey, please! Will you quit your complaining; it really isn't going to get us anywhere.
We just have to make do for right now. Did you hear about the celebration feast they are
having tomorrow? Maybe they will let us have a tiny bit of their food. Feast like that
always have leftovers; not only that but there is always a lot of waste. If they won't give us some food, maybe we can pick through the trash after they clean up."

"Stan, Stan, do you really think we will have something to eat tomorrow? I just have to
eat; I'm withering away to nothing; look at my ribs!" Huey poked his bones
protruding out his chest. "I just don't understand why these people have never given us
any food. They must know we are hungry; all homeless people are famished. They walk into church every Wednesday and Sunday and pass us by as if they never even noticed we exist."

"I know. The worse part about it is I've snuck in and watched what was happening
inside; all those people look so nice. They wear big smiles and fancy clothes, and that
pastor fellow, why, he's always talking about helping others and doing the things the Bible teaches. Oh well, not to worry Huey, not to worry, I know that God is watching out for us. We will get some food soon and maybe even a nice warm place to spend the rest of the winter. Maybe next year we can move to Florida for the winter."

The feast came and went; Stan and Huey waited, hoped, and even tried to beg for some
food, but all their efforts ended up in vain. The celebration ended with a bang; the
banquet was huge. Stan and Huey had never seen so much food and with such a variety.

"Stan, they're gone; every one of them has left. The doors are locked and the fellowship
hall is clean; but they left without giving us a single crumb. Quick, let's hit the dumpster!" Huey dashed to the back of the church were the dumpster sat right outside the kitchen door. He stopped dead in his tracks and Stan nearly plowed him over.

"What did you stop for?"

"Look! Who's that raiding our dumpster?" Huey had his fist raised ready to fight.

"Huey relax, I'm sure there is plenty of garbage for all of us. Besides we don't want to be
greedy and selfish like the people who wouldn't even give us a morsel of their food. Let's go introduce ourselves. Maybe he's nice and we can make a new friend." Stan pulled Huey along with him as they approached the stranger.

"Wow, he looks pretty bad," Huey said observing the man's unkempt, thin face.

"Hello!" Stan greeted with a smile. The man smiled back but didn't speak as he continued eating scraps from the trash. "My name is Stan and this is Huey. Have you been coming to this dumpster long?"

The man finished picking every scrap of meat off a chicken leg and slid down the
dumpster on to the pavement. He sat down with a look of satisfaction on his face. "Yep,
that was a mighty fine feast," the man said licking his lips one more time trying to savor
the flavor of the food. "Yep, this here dumpster is a guaranteed meal for us homeless
people. I sure am glad I found it. This church, why it's so rich it has meals a couple times
a week and the garbage they throw out is enough to feed an army of us nobodies. Too bad
they won't let us have the waste off a plate before it hit the rest of the trash. Oh well
I'm not complaining, no sir, the Lord has been good to me."

"Hey mister, you're a homeless guy eating garbage, how can you say the Lord has been
good to you? Yeah sure, Stan here is always telling me about the goodness of God, but
I'm just not sure."

"Yep, the Lord has been good to me. When my dad lost his medical license due to a
phony lawsuit, and we lost our home and everything, well, since then, Lord has always provided for me. I knew I could never find a job; no one in the town would hire me because of what they believed dad had done. Well, by the time I moved on, I was just too dirty, unshaven, and poor to ever find a job. Even so, God has never let me go hungry. He's always made sure I had enough clothes to keep me warm. I've always been able to find a safe place to sleep and most of all God has always been with me. He didn't abandon me like everyone else. Yep, He's been there every day, and He sure is good company when a person feels lonely."

Huey touched by the man's story just had to hear more; unfortunately as he
made his closer to him he tripped on lip of the dumpster and fell right on the man.

"Now what do we have here. You are one fine looking mouse." Just then Stan climbed on
the man and stopped right in his hand. "So, are you two my dining partners tonight?"
Huey and Stan tried to talk to the man, but, of course, he couldn't understand them. "Now
let me see," the man began digging in his pocket, "here it is. I found this rather large
piece of steak in the trash. I was saving it for later, but I think I'd like you two to have it.
You do look rather hungry."

The mice ate with delight. Huey rubbed his belly, which was finally big and round with food. "Well it's been fun having some company, but I have to get going. I have a place on the floor of the homeless shelter. It's not the Ritz, but it's warm. Hey, I bet you little fellers would like a warm place to spend the night. Why don't you come with me?" He scoop them up and placed them in his coat pocket.

"Stan, he sure is nice man." Huey soaked up the warmth of the pouch.

"He sure is. I was thinking. I know those people at that church have past us by all the
time, but we are just mice, they might not have spotted us; or they might not have liked
us, some people don't like rodents. What about him though? He is a real person; a human being. Do you think they would pass him by too?"
