A TEMPTED PEOPLE

by willetta pilcher
5/21/2010 / Christian Living

James 1:12 : Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.

Over recent years there have been a number of Christian leaders that have been caught having an affair. The revelation of which caused many to be rocked to the core. Questions of "How could they?" and "Why?" cross our minds. However, before anyone of us becomes judgmental and/or smug, thinking, "I would never do that," please understand that except for the grace of God there you and I go! None of us are immune to temptation. And none of us are immune to being taken captive. In spite of these facts we are not drawn to temptation and then left without choice.

So how do we protect ourselves from temptation.

1. Be totally devoted to the Lord Jesus. One cannot entertain godly thoughts and sinful thoughts at the same time and temptation always starts with thoughts. Therefore I must be aware of what I am allowing my mind to dwell upon. David said, Psa 119:11 "Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee."

2. Determine ahead of time that you will live, act, and speak in a godly manner both in public and in private. When decisions of this kind are made before temptation comes, the temptation loses much of its appeal. Psa 119:9 "Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word."

3. Recognize the fact that temptation always "looks" exciting and interesting. It appeals to our fleshly instincts and thoughts. If we are aware of this fact it helps us to question ourselves as to the appropriateness of action.

4. Protect the eye and ear gate. David said, Psa 101:3 "I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes:" Every media imaginable is used to entice our desires. We certainly do not have control over all of the things we see and/or hear but we do have control over the majority. When we give ourselves to repeated adventures into worldly thought (via tv, music, reading material etc) we allow ourselves to be open to suggestions of the same kind of activities. The thought stirs an excitement in us. And if we allow the thoughts to remain, we will eventually carry them out.

5. Be aware of the process. Take the time to read the story of Adam and Eve and the temptation in the Garden of Eden. (Gen 3:1-7) Notice the progression of the temptation. First... the question... "Have you noticed?" Second... the dialogue... between Eve and the serpent (satan). Third... Satan's final reply... "God is lying to you." Fourth... The look that creates desire. Fifth... the agreement ... human reasoning.

Sin hasn't changed it's approach. Mankind has been falling for it down through the centuries but why change a tactic when it works so well.
