From the Clutches of the Roaring Lion

by Jerry Ousley

They say that if you are confronted by a wild gorilla that it will beat its chest, roar at the top of its lungs and make several charging runs at you. They also say that when this happens if you remain calm and stand still it may get right up in your face, roaring until you can see its tonsils wiggling around but it won't hurt you unless you panic and run. Let me go on record as stating that I never intend to prove those sayings. I love to watch animals while they are safely behind bars and I'm several feet away, but I never intend to be in the wild with a gorilla and I certainly don't relish the thought of him roaring in my face with that ugly breath. Have you seen those massive arms? That thing could crush a man between its thumb and index finger if it wanted to. Not me! I intend to stay away, far away! But if you decide to prove whether these sayings are true or not, let me know how it works for you.

The devil is like that. The Bible tells us in 1 Peter 5:8 that he goes around as a roaring lion looking for those he can devour. There's a key word in that passage of scripture and it's the tiny word "as". It doesn't say that he is a roaring lion but that he goes around AS a roaring lion. It also doesn't say that he devours everyone he comes into contact with but he is seeking for those who he can devour. That would be those who are weak and afraid of him. Granted the devil is a powerful foe, but he is only as powerful as we who have Christ within us allow him to be. Without Christ we are helpless before the devil. But in Christ we have the power of the Holy Spirit dwelling in us and we can resist the devil to the point that he will actually flee from us. That's good to know and remember.

In 1 Samuel 17 we read the story of David and Goliath. This huge giant of a man defied the armies of Israel day in and day out. They were terrified of him. Who wouldn't be? I mean here stood a man nearly ten feet tall, strong as an ox with wicked looking weapons. He challenged them to send out a champion to fight with him - Winner take all. But what scrawny six foot man would stand a chance against this guy? Day after day he stood and bellowed out his challenge as it went unanswered.

That is until the day that David, merely a teenager, took supplies to his brothers who were fighting in the army of Israel. While he was there admiring the shiny armor, sharp spears, swords and equipment, Goliath stood on the hill on the other side of the valley and issued his daily challenge. David was awestruck that no one in the army of Israel would stand up to this beast of a man. He said in a nutshell, "I think I can take him!" His brothers made fun of him but word came to King Saul that someone had accepted the challenge of Goliath.

They doubted that he could stand up to the task but David quickly told them about two occasions when he had rescued one of the lambs of his father's flock, once from a lion and once from a bear. He indicated that he took the lamb right out of their mouths and killed the beasts with the help of God. As we all know, he did stand up to Goliath and defeated him leading the army of Israel to a great victory against the Philistines.

The point is that we who have come to the Lord are lambs. The devil may come up against us and take us in his very mouth it seems, carrying us off away from our Lord. But He is a mighty warrior! When we cry out to Him He will come to our rescue. He will stand up to the devil through us, pluck us from his ugly mouth and slay our enemy. We need to have faith that God in us by way of the Holy Spirit makes the giant - the devil, pale in His shadow. We have a warrior within us that can stand up to any test. We will be rescued if we hold tightly to our Master Shepherd one way or another, whether on this side of Heaven or the better side (which is actually being there). He will pluck us from the mouth of the one who goes about as a roaring lion!
