Broken Promises and Shattered Dreams

by Randall Wadley
2/26/2007 / Christian Living

Why do we utter pledges we can't keep? We make them with good intensions and try our best to bring them to pass, but they seem so elusive. Where are we going wrong?

Promises ~ Promises ~ Promises

Do we set ourselves up for a fall when we take a promise to heart? Can I promise you love or happiness? The truth is I can't guarantee your next breath much less tomorrow or the next day. When we make promises, are we not fortune telling? Can we pledge something that's not ours? Can we promise love without knowing its author? Can we guarantee tomorrow if we don't know where it resides? Our words aren't absolute and time has no redemption.

Now listen, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money." 14Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. 15Instead, you ought to say, "If it is the Lord's will, we will live and do this or that." 16As it is, you boast and brag. All such boasting is evil. (James 4:13-16)

Outside the Lords will is eternal death. Our dreams and plans will come to naught if they don't line up with His will. I fall short and have uttered promises without the power to keep them. This has shattered the dreams of those who I loved, because they put their faith in my word. We all wish we could turn back the hands of time, but outside the Lord, time has no redemption.

Many are the plans in a man's heart, but it is the LORD's purpose that prevails. (Proverbs 19:21)

Empty promises are a byproduct of man and can only lead to shattered dreams. This can be a road block in our spiritual walk if we don't know the truth. We need to put our faith in Jesus Christ, His promises are absolute and He has the power to keep them. The next time you make a promise or receive one, remember there's only One with the power to bring it to manifestation.
