The Control For The Soul Part II

by Dale Linton
9/25/2010 / Bible Studies

Galatians 5:17
For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

There are battles won and lost everyday for the controlling influence of our souls.

1 Peter 2:11
Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which wars against the soul;

Our enemy, Satan, wars against the soul with the weaponry of influencing a deceitful heart that is susceptible to being attracted to and believing that the world can satisfy desires inherent within the heart. The human heart sees this optional path of life through what is termed "fleshly lusts". This attraction is identified through the influence of the body, which comes from the dust. The reason the body plays this vital role in the earths appealing nature, is because the body its made of the same stuff that we're attracted to. This connection makes perfect sense and the heart would have no way of comprehending any negative outcome. Here is the common truth in the outcome of choices concerning fleshly lusts and how they war against the soul.

The goals for which our choices were intended are left unrealized, actually having us progressing in the exact opposite direction from accomplishing what we were seeking.

This activity leads us into becoming a "prisoner of this war" to which the Bible identifies in a word called "bondage."

Galatians 4:9
But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage?

What Are "Beggarly Elements"?

The phrase "beggarly elements" doesn't suggest that the elements are poor, nor are the people poor who turn again to these elements. It suggests that the act of those turning to the elements, mimic that of a beggar. As a person who is overcome by poverty results to begging for substance, so is a person overcome by the desires for the elements of this world. The desires are never truly fed so; the soul becomes impoverished begging or continually seeking for elements that satisfy its hunger. While our hearts desire the elements of the world to satisfy our needs, the truth is these elements are temporal and only offer temporary satisfaction. To this end we are overcome, and that which has the power to overcome us will also captivate and dictate our desires, which is nothing more than bondage of the will.

The Reality We Face On Planet Earth

Fruit of the Flesh is Sin
Fruit of Sin is Death

Fruit of the Spirit is Love
Fruit of Love is Life

Life has two utlimate paths to take. One produces death, navigating us towards those choices that are destructive and lead us away from purposeful goals. The other produces life, illuminating what we truly need to realize goals full of purpose. Our choice is this, we can allow the world to make us something we don't want to be, or we can allow God to make us something we can't even imagine we could become.

I have a desire to see the body of Christ edified. Within the broad spectrum of edification I feel there exists a great need and opportunity for spiritual education at foundational levels. Please contact me about speaking at your church. Dale Linton 410-378-5035 or [email protected]
