A Heart With A Mind of Its Own

Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

The Heart In Relationship To God

Because God has a heart, and we are made with a heart we have potential for an extremely close relationship with Him. Heart to Heart.

Acts 13:22
And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will.

When God looks at us He looks at our heart.

1 Samuel 16:7
But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.

Out of our heart comes success or defeat
from those things which challenge us.

Proverbs 4: 23
Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

The Heart In Relationship To How We Function

Thoughts come out of our heart.

Proverbs 33:11
The counsel of the LORD standeth forever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.

Mark 7:21
For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,

Emotions come out of our heart.

Deuteronomy 28:47
Because thou servedst not the LORD thy God with joyfulness, and with gladness of heart, for the abundance of all things;

Ecclesiastes 5:20
For he shall not much remember the days of his life; because God answereth him in the joy of his heart.

The will comes out of the heart.

Ephesians 6:6
Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart;

1Corinthians 7:37
Nevertheless he that standeth steadfast in his heart, having no necessity, but hath power over his own will, and hath so decreed in his heart that he will keep his virgin, doeth well.

The Heart in Relationship to Truth
Positive View.

We serve God in truth with the heart.

1Samuel 12:24
Only fear the LORD, and serve him in truth with all your heart: for consider how great things he hath done for you.

We can walk before the Lord in truth with all our heart.

1 Kings 2:4
That the LORD may continue his word which he spoke concerning me, saying, If thy children take heed to their way, to walk before me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul, there shall not fail thee (said he) a man on the throne of Israel.

We speak truth in the heart.

Psalms 15:2
He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart.

The Heart in Relationship to Truth
Negative View

The power of truth in the heart can be reversed.

Romans 1:18, 21
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in nrighteousness Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

The heart can see the truth as a lie.

Romans 1:24, 25
Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonor their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshiped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen

The heart is ultimately a good or bad steward of truth.

Proverbs 14: 22
Do they not err that devise evil? but mercy and truth shall be to them that devise good.

Matthew 12:35
A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.

How May a Heart Have a Mind of Its Own?

Daniel 5:20
But when his heart was lifted up, and his mind hardened in pride, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him:
