Help Me Lord!
By Jerry D. Ousley

Have you ever found yourself in a position in which you literally cried out for help? "Help me!" Sometimes the situation in which we find ourselves is our own fault and sometimes we've just been in the wrong place at the wrong time. I found myself in a situation which was really my own fault, but even so, I still needed help.

I had been in the process of changing the oil in our car. We were preparing to take a trip but it was time for an oil change so I thought I'd go out and get it done before we left. I raised the hood (it was the kind that had the lifters instead of springs or a hood-prop) and got everything ready, shoved the oil drip pan underneath the car to catch the old oil then lay down on the cold ground intending to reach under the vehicle and remove the oil pan plug. However I had developed a bad habit of holding myself by placing my hand up the fender and just inside the opening where the hood closed. As I did our cat jumped up on the car and decided to try her luck on that raised hood. The lifters were weak and when she did it was just enough weight to force the hood closed right on my fingers; yep, three of my fingers were stuck in that tiny crack you see between the fender of your car and the hood. I was trapped and I had no problem calling out for help.

Fortunately for me, my daughter had come out with me intending to help Dad change the oil. But it was cold and she had decided to go back into the house. She was just ready to open the door and disappear inside when I called out to her to get Mom. She paused a moment (which seemed an eternity to me because my fingers were throbbing from being stuck in that small crack) and then she ran to get Debbie. Debbie came right out and saw my predicament, opened the door of the car and released the hood latch then raised the hood. When the pressure on my fingers was lifted I didn't hesitate to pull them out of those jaws of death! I figured I'd pull out a bloody mess but there was no blood at all. Instead my three fingers were smashed flat between the knuckles and joints above the fingernails. It reminded me of a sway backed horse. We went down to the emergency room to get x-rayed to making sure nothing was broken or misplaced or out of place. That process took an hour or more It's funny how it's called an emergency room but no one seems to get in a hurry, know what I mean?

By the time they took the x-rays my fingers had filled back out to their normal size and except for three very sore fingers everything was okay miracle of miracles! I not only got help from my daughter, my wife, and some friends she had called, but also from God because that situation could have been much worse. Afterwards I looked at the place where my fingers had been caught and noticed how sharp the edge was. You'll never convince me that I shouldn't have lost a finger or two in that incident and that it was by the grace of God that I didn't.

David found himself in a much worse predicament. He cried out to God in Psalm 12:1, "Help, LORD, for the godly man ceases! For the faithful disappear from among the sons of men." He was in a place where all human aid had failed him. Even those he felt were godly men had let him down. Have you ever felt you were in a place like that? Perhaps you've had great confidence in your pastor or a Christian friend and it seemed that they let you down. You needed help and you cried out but no one could help you. It happens. We must remember that we are all human and even though your pastor or a Christian friend may have your very best interest at heart, there will come a time when no one can understand and no one can help us.

That's when we need to do as David did and ask the Lord for help. I know that we should always put Him first and allow Him to help us first. But we don't live in a perfect world and we don't always react to trouble perfectly. We tend to seek immediate help in what we can see, hear and feel. When all outside help fails us, we can depend on God. Even though we may have saved Him as the last resort, He will come to our aid. When it seems the faithful have disappeared and there is no one else, cry out "Help Lord!" And He will.
