Show kindness to a Child

by Felix Odiogor-Odoh
12/16/2010 / Christian Living

When I set out to write this article, I did not know what "gift" I was going to get the next day. This is the gift."No child will spend Christmas in an immigration detention centre and the "shameful" practice will be stopped by May, the British Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has announced. Protecting children is more important than "paranoia" about UK borders, Nick Clegg said. We are ending the shameful practice that last year alone saw over 1,000 children - 1,000 innocent children - imprisoned," Mr Clegg announced.
This article is not about immigration in any way; I am excited that something good has happened to some children somewhere in the world.
In the scripture we read of an incident when children were brought to Jesus for him to place his hands on them. Some of the disciples did not quite see any wisdom in this and so asked the people who brought the children to take them away. Jesus intervened and asked the children to come. He gave some time to those children despite his busy schedule.
"And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them: and his disciples rebuked those that brought them. But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God". Mark 10:12-13. KJV.
Childhood is a time of vulnerability. The societies today, in many countries, expose children to lots of danger and harm. They are exposed to hunger, deprivation, abuse, isolation, lack of basic care and death.
In many places provisions are not made to accommodate children; even a smile is too precious for some to give to a child. Children are considered "nuisance" and should be kept off so that adult can do their "thing". This "thing" could be anything from good to bad. That is one of the reasons for all the weird things and abuse against children, which is in the news everyday.
In many families children are at risk of harm because of domestic violence. This can be direct abuse or what they see parents do.
According to National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC); "the violence may involve: physical abuse, sexual assault and threats, making someone feel worthless, not letting them have any money, not allowing them to leave home"

Every segment of the society should give all it takes to make this world a good place for children. It should not be at Christmas or children's day only, but always and in all places. Churches should make children ministry a priority. Killing children during a war should never be tolerated and those who recruit children to fight wars should be prosecuted. Food, shelter, health care and education for children should be at the top of national budgets. Parents should see the care of children as a primary assignment and employers should be encouraged to support parents to care for their children when the need arises.

Do something today to make the life of a child worth living. Show some kindness.
