The Operation of Spirit and Soul

Discussions and debates on the relationship, and the operation of the soul and the spirit, have produced no convincing biblical explanation that may be accepted by a majority of biblical scholars. There are varying opinions concerning this topic and an explanation in truth seems to elude a general consensus. One might wonder if it's really important to know, or has God revealed an answer within His word that biblical scholars are just missing? Futhermore, if it's being missed then why? What is the reason?

In an effort to address how important our own operational awareness should be, consider the following explanation of Hosea 4:6.

The most important part of us is the thing we know the least about. This part of our makeup is called our spirit. If it were ones aim to destroy another human being, this is the part one would insidiously attack. The reason our vulnerability lies in our spirit is because our spirit is the life giving force within us. If the spirit of a human being is impaired, then life with all its complexities, can become a perplexing maze of unfulfillment. Satan's greatest tools are found in the strategy of keeping us in a state, which takes no notice of what we don't know about our spirits. "My people are destroyed for the lack of knowledge," Hosea 4:6.

So how does our spirit and our soul work together? Its important to make note of two truths to understand this working order. First, no matter how much we feel like it is , our soul is not self generating. The soul doesn't contain its own "operating ignition" such that we wouldn't think anything, feel anything or have the capacity to make decisions if something wasn't giving life to these operations. Our soul was created needing a relational counterpart that completes its operational design. This life giving counterpart is called our spirit, which leads to our second point of understanding, which is this. Our spirit is not something we may assume ownership of. It is on loan to us and something we are completely dependant on to sustain and occupy existence on planet Earth.. In the spirit of a human being are all of the God given gifts and potential for which our soul may relationally live out. The important point is, these gifts, their potential, and life itself belong to God requiring a relationship with Him to tap the fullness for which we seek.

The previous description is one given in a "quick and dirty" format and deserves much more in the way of a relational examination. At the risk of skimming over the explanation of the relationship of the soul and the spirit , consider the following comparison as more than a mere coincidence.

The landscape of Christianity generally acknowledges that the natural world in which we live, reveals truths that exist in the world of the spiritual. In other words, the patterns seen in the natural world have a spiritual blueprint. It may be said that God will many times confirm mysteries in His word, which is spiritual, by revealing truths in natural illustrations. What then is apparent in our natural world that would suggest that the previous description of the soul and spirit relationship is true? The answer may be seen in the world of cordless devices such as cell phones, cordless power tools and all manner of rechargeable devices. Man has created many devices that carry their life source with them in a portable way. A cordless drill as a good example has the drill itself to perform many functions at variable speeds. However, if the battery pack looses its power, the drill ceases to operate. These devices all mimic the way our spirit and soul function in a relational operation. The battery that provides a charge to the circuitry built in the device, is much like the spirit of man that gives life to his soul. Man has created all these devices in this modern age exactly on the order of himself, without even realizing it. Infact, that's why things are made like this, because we're like that. Go figure!

In the beginning of this article this question was offered up; if scholars have missed this working order of our soul and spirit then why? Here I believe is our answer, God did such a magnificant job of gifting us with life, that comes from something called our spirit; our tendency is to take ownership of it. The error in that selfish attitude, clouds our reasoning to the truth! Amen?

I have a desire to see the body of Christ edified. Within the broad spectrum of edification I feel there exists a great need and opportunity for spiritual education at foundational levels. Please contact me about speaking at your church. Dale Linton 410-378-5035 or [email protected]
