My Father Owns the Land On Both Sides Of the Muddy River

by Richard Steven Adams
1/26/2011 / Christian Living

We live in Tualatin close to Brown's Ferry Park which cozies up to the Tualatin River. I went down to the river yesterday, and as expected, it was swollen with rain. One of the small wooden bridges that cross a four feet creek was almost twenty feet wide.

The river looked muddier than usual as it moved quickly eastward. Here and there small bits of debris, mostly small tree branches, went hitch hiking past me; carried along by the racing current. It was only a few months ago that Lily and I canoed lazily against the current, but now we'd have no chance.

I confess I like the Oregon rain. It smells great and always makes me think of new beginnings and growth, but there is no pleasure hearing that some folks lost their homes. Yesterday's gloomy rain seemed lonely, bereaved.

Hills and valleys, rain and sunshine, gloom and joy are life, but I've heard some say that on the other side of the river is joy ever-lasting. Yes, I believe in heaven, but I wonder, "Is it what we expect?" What about the pie in the sky? Doesn't the Bible say the New Jerusalem comes down to earth? If we can't love life now, can we love life then?

Henri Nouwen said, "Eternity is born in time, and every time someone dies whom we have loved dearly, eternity can break into our mortal existence a little bit more."

Part of grower older is having eternity break into your mortal existence more and more; losing your parents, losing some friends and knowing that one day you too will be carried along by a fast current going where you've never been before.

Heaven is like the image we construct of the God we've never seen. I just can't see heaven as pie in the sky, but the thought of being with the One who made this muddy river, the one brings the robin and the worm, the one who has prepared a place for me ... its enough to make me smile, for my Father owns the land on both sides of the river.

Richard does Spiritual Direction and occasional video projects for George Fox Evangelical seminary where he received his M-Div.
