Job 39:13 "The ostrich's wings flap wildly,
though its pinions lack plumage.
14 For it leaves its eggs to the earth,
and lets them be warmed on the ground,
15 forgetting that a foot may crush them,
and that a wild animal may trample them.
16 It deals cruelly with its young, as if they were not its own;
though its labor should be in vain, yet it has no fear;
17 because God has made it forget wisdom,
and given it no share in understanding.

This passage reminds me ... and you, just look around, of our carnage. So many people are trying to make their way through life's wreckage; past twisted relationships, broken promises and the three 'd's; doubt, despair, depression. Is the answer for depression a pill, that, by the way, might lead to suicide? Suicide, that seemingly final answer that brings us into God's presence ... too soon ... uninvited.

Numb, dead to life,
purblind angels
look defiantly at a brazen sky
and wonder why they cannot fly.

Who said it is merely a matter of making the patient see their issue? Seeing my issues only drives me closer to God, knowing a pill rents a fraction of time, but eviction is inevitable. We may flap our wings wildly, but our labor is in vain, fleeting. Sustainable is a concept, a promise, but history and science say otherwise.

I had the opportunity of working at a Memorial yesterday at Rolling Hills Community Church in Tualatin. I listened to people celebrate the life of someone who invested them self in others. One after one her legacy witnessed and testified what her presence meant and what her friendship means; how she made their life richer, fuller.

One woman talked how her dying friend would pray for her, the living. Sustainability becomes reality when it turns outward, not inward. When we remember life is about everyone, EVERYONE else, not us, that brazen sky turns gentle, life triumphs over death, and we gain the very thing we gave away, us.

Richard does Spiritual Direction and occasional video projects for George Fox Evangelical seminary where he received his M-Div.
