Three Reasons Why You Might Be Depressed

by Greg Baker
2/17/2011 / Self Help

Here are probably the top 3 reasons why you might be feeling depressed and a little something you can do about it. All healing begins, first, with understanding the reasons. Anything else merely masks the problem, but does not solve it.

As a pastor and counselor for over 15 years, I've had ample opportunity to study depression as time after time people have sat in my office struggling to overcome this mountain in their lives. So, first, let me unequivocally say that although I do believe that depression is affected by our physical or mental condition, it is primarily a spiritual issue.

Depression, therefore, must be dealt with from a spiritual perspective if you have any hopes of ever conquering it. Again, this is not to say that your physical and mental condition don't affect itit does. Just like driving your car will affect the condition of your engine. But driving more carefully does not fix any damage already done to the engine. After all, depression isn't a disease. It isn't something you can catch like the flu or the cold. It is a spiritual condition.

So, what are some of the main reasons for depression?

LACK OF SELF-CONFIDENCE

Confident people are rarely depressed. But if you don't believe in yourself, in your own value, in your own abilities, or in your own position in life, the odds are you will experience some degree of depression.

I understand that in our best state we are altogether sinful. Yet that does not preclude God from loving us. It does not excuse us from His grace, love, or mercy. It does not isolate us from a plan where God intends to use us greatly for His will. Our faults and failures do not mean we are useless or void of importance. Within the presence of God and with His help, we can do and accomplish great things!

John 14:12 - Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

Yet when we begin to believe that we are useless we are inviting depression. Don't ever believe you are useless. God created you. I don't think God created something useless. It may take a bit of searching, but I promise, you can discover a rich life with incredible purpose and meaning within your own God given ability!

REJECTION

Loneliness and rejection are great contributors to depression. Acceptance is a universally human need. We all want to feel accepted. But either due to divorce, abandonment, or rejection from our social peers you may now find yourself in the throes of depression.

To add to the damage, depression will often cause you to retreat into yourself and avoid other people. The more you avoid people the more you will feel rejected, which in turn will make you want to avoid people even more. It is a vicious cyclea deadly cycle.

You must decide you are going to become a part of other people's lives in order to break out of your depressed funk. God did not create us to handle isolation well. We need people. We need relationships. Some may feel they can do without people, but to put it directly, there are areas of their lives that will never really develop. There will be essential ingredients for happiness that they will never realize.

You need people!

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 - Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.

FEAR

More and more people are seeking counsel for anxiety and panic attacks. Fear is a spiritual issue. It can be born out of a lack of self-confidence and rejection, but the more we fear the more depressed we become.

2 Timothy 1:7 - For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

Whether it is the fear of death, the fear of people, or the fear of our own insecurities, fear is a driving force behind depression. Fear, interestingly enough, is often the result of perspective. Your understanding of the situation and surroundings often breeds the fear you have. Fear is rarely based on reality. Fearing what other people think of you, for instance, is usually an exercise in futility. You can't possibly know what everyone is thinking all the time. Even the fear of death is a result of a misconception. Death isn't an end; it is a beginning. If you are a believer in God and Jesus Christ, death harbors no sting for you. Again, it is all perspective.

Facing your fears is necessary to overcoming them. To do so, you need inspiration. You need to be inspired. When I am facing one of my own fears, I often read biographies of men and women who faced similar experiences. Their struggles inspire me. Preaching inspires me. My Bible inspires me. Having loving people around me inspires me.

Fear, according to 1 John 4:18, is cast out by love. There is no greater inspiration than knowing someone loves you. If you don't feel anyone does, integrate yourself into the lives of those around you and you will soon feel loved yourself. Love others and they will love you. It is why I love Godbecause He loved me first.

God bless you in your journey to overcome the spiritual issues of depression.
