Feathers no longer soar
through November's storm. Riding
lake's chilly crest
a Mallard rocks in stillness
outstretched wings at rest.
No more journeys south -- often
led season's flight
raised a family within
the wilderness
of this bay. Now to miss Spring's
returning joy
in swooping delight.
Lifeless -- not soon forgotten.
