Pastor befriends church mouse
by Greg Miller
3/20/2011 / Humor
Church Mouse Clarissa was well known in the mouse community for her fondness of cheese.
"Cheese is your middle name," joked Pastor Charles, who served as the minister of the church where Clarissa lived.
Clarissa agreed. "Cheese is my favorite food, but I also like potato chips, cookies, pasta, whole wheat bread and peanut butter," she said.
"Basically, if it's edible, I will eat it and thank the Sovereign Lord for it," said Clarissa. "There are mice all around the world who don't have any food at all, so I'm thankful to God for providing any food for me."
"I'll give you one thing," said Pastor Charles. "You certainly do a fine job of not being seen during our church fellowship dinners. I think I'm the only person who is aware of your presence there."
"My parents taught me the dangers of being a mouse in a world dominated by humans," said Clarissa. "I have learned that lesson very well, too."
"I may introduce you to the other members of the congregation at our next fellowship meal," said Pastor Charles. "I think if they knew you they would like you as much as I do."
"That's possible, I guess," said Clarissa. "But I'm really not willing to take a chance on it just yet."
Two weeks later, the congregation gathered for its monthly fellowship meal.
As was her custom, Clarissa kept herself hidden under the table at which the pastor sat. Normally, Clarissa went out of her way to make sure she wasn't seen by human eyes, but on this occasion she wasn't quite as careful as she usually was, and Pastor Charles noticed her running near his feet. She motioned for him to drop a precious morsel of food on the floor for her.
As he dropped the biscuit crumb on the floor, Pastor Charles signaled Clarissa to move further under the table. Clarissa complied, and Pastor Charles didn't see her again until after all the congregants had gone home.
The pastor coaxed the mouse from her hiding spot under the table. "I have a surprise for you," said Pastor Charles. "It's a small piece of cheesecake I saved especially for you."
"Thanks, Pastor Charles," said Clarissa. "I didn't think I was going to get any dessert."
"You're welcome, Clarissa," said Pastor Charles. "I know you work very hard as our church mouse, so I wanted to do something nice for you."
Clarissa told the pastor that she enjoyed listening to his Sunday morning messages. "You are such a good communicator," said Clarissa. "I know I'm not human, but I feel you're talking directly to me."
"I appreciate your attentiveness," said Pastor Charles. "Sometimes, I have to talk very loudly just to make sure that some of my human parishioners don't fall asleep!"
