John 2:11 (NIV) - This, the first of His miraculous signs, Jesus performed at Cana in Galilee. He thus revealed His glory, and His disciples put their faith in Him.
At a wedding reception Jesus graciously fulfilled a very human request.
Only God could change the physical properties of water to wine. The disciples who were with Him witnessed this first miracle. They had followed Him for many reasons, but when they saw this proof of His divinity, they truly and irrevocably believed Him to be the long-awaited Messiah, the Anointed One of God.
Like those disciples then, we sometimes want to see proof, we want a miracle. But, like changing the water to wine, sometimes the proof, the miracle comes in an unexpected form.
While we wait and plead for God to act on our behalf, we miss the miracles going on all around us. We are so concentrated on an immediate circumstance that we fail to notice that all around us God is showing His power and demonstrating His presence.
Changing the water to wine was a foreshadow of what Jesus would ultimately accomplish - changing lives from death to life. Only God can bring our dead spirits to life and only He can completely change our lives and our hearts.
As His children, we praise and thank Him for performing this miracle in us. Whenever we witness this miracle in someone else, it strengthens our faith in Him and reminds us to praise and honor Him for who He is.
Miracles can be seen all around us if we look beyond ourselves and see what God is doing in the lives of others, what He is showing us in the world He created and what He wants to do through us.
