Love not the world

by naomi Cassata
4/19/2011 / Devotionals

Recently I sat down with my six-year-old daughter to watch a "little girl's" cartoon movie. The characters were beautiful. They always said the right things, made the right moves, dressed like they walked off the runway and had the most perfect shaped bodies. And to top it all off, the main character's boyfriend dropped everything and flew all the way to Paris, where his girlfriend was visiting, in order to set things straight. It was so sickeningly fake!

After watching this movie, I began to think what my daughter was learning about womanhood. Was she absorbing from the movie what I was? That beauty is defined in the way we look, dress, act and how our body is shaped. And when you have all the above guys will do ridiculous things like fly across the world to make amends.

The last thing I want my daughter to do is be concerned about the exterior. This is not the most important thing in life, regardless of what we see in the media. I don't want her to grow up in a generation of girls that basis their worth on how she looks to others. It's all in our culture. Many choose to turn a blind eye while the rest try to achieve it for themselves.

When the sons of Jesse passed by Samuel, Samuel was tempted to choose the next king of Isreal based on the outward appearance. Every time Samuel thought a son of Jesse had to be the one, God said no. Finally, the youngest and least expected one, David, was chosen. You see, man looks on the outward appearance, but God..well, he looks at the heart.

The outward appearance has become an idol in our society. Everyone naturally wants to be accepted, so they become copy cats of what the media has portrays as popular. In the mix of it all we have become lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God (2 Timothy 3:4). When we seek to look and act like the world, we are putting a stamp on our lives that we says "we belong to the world."

Our lives are to emanate the glory of God inside and out. Seeking to look like the world, talk like the world and act like the world shows that something inside our hearts is not right. We are seeking acceptance from the world, so we adapt to the culture around us, even though it compromises our morals.
As Christians, we are to seek to please God ultimately, with everything. God looks to the inside of a person. The exterior is only a reflection of what is going on inside the heart.
If we love the world, the love of God is not inside us (1 John 2:15).
