Living on the Word

by Jerry Ousley
4/22/2011 / Christian Living

By now you are probably getting sick of hearing me talk about eating, and I'm sorry about that, but folks, I just can't help it. I like to eat (okay, okay, I know you've heard that before). There are a few foods I don't like. For instance, I don't like jalapeo peppers. I don't like guacamole salad or anything to do with it. I'm not crazy about Chinese food (although I did find a restaurant that is exceptional in this cuisine category). However, it's much easier to find something I like than to find something I don't like.

While eating is necessary to sustain life just like nearly everything else it can also destroy life. I like to kid about eating but I know there are those who have eating disorders that have made them obese. They don't want to be that way. They are always very aware of their situation. For some it is a medical condition and for others they have gotten themselves into a trap that it is very difficult to overcome.

Others have experienced anorexia disorders where they can't stop eating but then they force themselves to get rid of the food after they have eaten it. What a horrible torture this condition must be! I can't imagine eating all that food then getting rid of it.

I performed a funeral for a gentleman recently who had suffered several years from Alzheimer's disease. During the final stages I was told that the brain cells that tell us to eat were destroyed and he simply stopped eating. How awful to starve to death with food all around you.

In a way that's kind of what the world is doing to itself spiritually. In Luke 4:4 we read, "But Jesus answered him, saying, 'It is written, 'MAN SHALL NOT LIVE BY BREAD ALONE, BUT BY EVERY WORD OF GOD.''" He had just finished a forty day fast and the Bible tells us that afterward He was hungry. Wouldn't you know it; just when we are at our weakest point that's when the devil shows up! Jesus, being the Son of God, He could have done just what the devil had tempted Him to do; who would have known it? The devil told Him, "If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread." It was not an impossible task for our Lord. But He would not use the power of God for selfish purposes so in the middle of His hunger He turned to the devil and told him the words quoted from the scripture.

By saying this Jesus was also confirming that we not only have to eat to live physically but we also must take in nourishment to live spiritually. To continue our daily Christian lives we must feast on the Word of God. That's the Bible. There are so many arguments against it today and I just don't have time to address them all. But I'm going to simply say that it has been proven true over and over again, despite skeptical accusations and doubts. Others can choose to believe what they want to believe; that's their right. But me, I choose to believe every word of it. I'll stake my life on its truths.

Just like the gentleman mention who suffered from that terrible disease of the brain, many have gone so long without spiritual food that they just forget to eat. It has become habitual for them and that's even more tragic than physically forgetting to eat. You see this life, regardless how long or short it may be, is merely temporary, but our spiritual existence is forever. If we die without knowing Jesus Christ as our Savior then we will exist eternally in death. But if we make Him our Lord then we have the promise of eternal life. In order to maintain that life we need to eat from the Word of God. It's best to make it a daily habit. Now I don't insist that we read a certain number of chapters each day. While it gives us a sense of accomplishment I don't even tell people that they need to read the Bible through every year. That's a choice that each individual must make for themselves. The important thing is to digest what we read. If all we can handle is one verse a day, and we understand what we've read and make it a part of our lives then that is more beneficial than reading five or ten chapters and not remembering what we've read. Regardless how much we eat of the word we must make it a part of our lives, and when we do then we can know that we are living on what God has said.
