means a hot meal
at the church weekly luncheon
volunteers anxious to do
their bit for Jesus,
bless them all.
In the corridor a
culture of excitement as people
line up, tummies grumbling
--what's on tap today?
a voice asks. Had hamburger
lasagna, soup
'n sandwiches las' couple weeks.
--Leftovers, someone jokes.
Chairs fill up,
there's Hank and Dolores
as usual without a flash of cash
bumming smokes,
yet happy in their friendships,
wary of others
who snatch the best bench
on Prince Street
--barbecue chicken today,
quickly tumbles from the crowd.
--Know something? another
mouth cuts in,
--yesterday Mary Lou had
a baby girl.
