Once he held esteem among
the forest, young legs dashing
headstrong through thickets.
Nothing fazed him; ravines
filled with hubris, nor ridges
where feet sought a hold
then pulled down after health
threatened; barely survived.
Now he shuffles from closet
to kitchen, to washroom, back
again. Eyes still sparkle
can sense billowing wind rise
within birch clusters, remembers
trout as they peer above lake's
surface. At peace, content to sit
gazing out a window, reading
his Bible during struggles, the
Word a song of life and love.
