The Wood-Chopper
by Richard L. Provencher
4/30/2011 / Poetry

The wood-chopper takes
a rest, his arms heavy
from tired muscles. He
touches his skin and feels
stiffness, yet this effort
will satisfy a need for
exercise, and make sure
children and a good wife
will be warm by the fire
during coolness of night.

He returns to his duties
and in the next hour he
feels the busy wind keep
him company so he may
continue to finish the task
of chopping his wood.

In the evening after the
fullness of food, all sing
of their joy and the plenty
which entered their home.
Prayers of thanksgiving
are soon heard from their
family as all heads bow.

 Richard L. Provencher
