Stomping Out Fear

Fear for many people is a daily occurrence. The type of fear I'm talking about is not the normal God-given fear that keeps us from doing dangerous things like jumping off a cliff or walking out in the middle of traffic. These are good fears that keep us from danger. However, there is a fear out there that is tormenting the minds of people to the point that it is wrecking havoc in their bodies. Fear puts not only our minds but also our physical bodies under tremendous stress. Our hormonal glands are regulated by our thoughts. If we are in continual fear, worry and stress, our hormones become out of line. The proper flow of hormones becomes out of whack; and as a result, our bodies don't function properly.

When I was nine-years-old a girl in my class told several girls she was pregnant. I remember walking out the bathroom, where she had told us this, and being drenched in fear. I had no idea how someone became pregnant and I feared I may be too! I laugh about it now, but back then the fear terrified me. The more I dwelt on the possibility, the sicker I felt. The fear I had was a tormenting fear. It was a fear based on a lie. My mind believed something that was impossible and yet because of a lack of knowledge, I believed it to be true. I definitely got passed this fear in my life. But fear doesn't go away just because we grow up. It takes on new liesgrown up liesif you will. Fear preys on our minds. It takes a thought and magnifies it into a worst case scenario. It's our choice whether we want to believe it or not. The more we give in to the lie, the bigger the lie becomes and the more susceptible we become to believing the next one. Before long, it becomes a way of thinking for usa part of our lives. Fear must be stopped in its tract. This dangerous pattern of thinking can be reversed. You can be healed from this.
To anyone who has suffered with being a worrier or a fearful person there is hope for you. Sometimes we feel alone in our fear. We cry out to God to deliver us and yet we still seem to struggle with our own thoughts. It truly is a battle of the mind.

The beautiful thing about God becoming man is that He can feel our weakness and knows our deepest pains. Our fears do not pass by Jesus lightly. He knows where you are and what you are going through, and He is full of compassion for you right where you are. Throughout the gospels we read Jesus' wisdom to all believers concerning fear. He tells us, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid" (John 14:27). You must realize that fear is solely based on a lie. When we accept a lie, we are living in that lie and we become tormented by the fear behind it.

The only way to overcome fear is with the truth. Truth is only found in the Bible. The more we absorb from the truth, the strength behind our fear will die. We must exercise what we read in the word. For example, if you are lying in bed and you feel overwhelmed with fear of being alone in the dark, remember the truth that Jesus said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you" or "I have not given you a spirit of fear." These are God's truth for us to live by. As Christians we have overcome the world. Jesus said, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God" (Matthew 4:4). Meaning we must practice or walk out what God's word says about His children every day. If we don't, we will continue to believe a lie.

Fear has the power to cripple us. Although, as believers in Jesus, we have the key to overcome all fear. It's through the truth in God's word that we stomp out the fear in our lives. Remember, Jesus suffered for our healing. He took it all, so that we could be free. Exercise that freedom by walking out the word in your life.
