Beggar Children

by Steve Countryman
5/13/2011 / Christian Living

It is something that I never thought of, comparing beggar children to Christian behavior. But that is exactly what it tends to be when we only see God as "the provider of our entitlements and blessings" and not as our God whom we serve. How many churches, preachers, ministries and doctrines are out there that teaches only God's provisions and blessings but not worshiping, reverential fear and serving our God? I'm no better than anyone else and I have caught myself praying for my needs and problems more often than praying for others or my relationship with my God. God isn't here for us we are here for Him. God just wants to be part of our daily lives. We need Him He doesn't need us! Beggar children swarm the rich tourist as they enter a town and surround them. They relentlessly beg, harass, tug at and plead for money from the people they target. They see those people as their suppliers and not as friends or family so they treat the tourist badly. They will continue to pester them until they give in. The children really don't care about the tourist, who they are nor are they interested in finding out. We as God's children treat Him the same way when we fall into the mind set that God is here for our needs as if God is our own private genie. That is disrespectful, arrogant and a self-centered attitude towards God.

What person enjoys their friends who only come around to get bailed out of trouble or need money then disappear once you give in to them. They are too busy enjoying their lives at your expense to spend any quality time with you. Those relationships lack intimacy, closeness, true friendship and caring love. God the Father is no different. He wants a daily close and personal relationship with you. Not just to be the one who always rescues you but one you confide in and are totally open and honest with. John 15:15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends. A friend will spend time with you to know you not to abuse you.

We serve the creator of the heavens and the universe and we should treat Him as such. Yes He is our heavenly Father but He is also King of kings and Lord of lords, God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. He is God the great I AM, Jehovah God, Elohim, Adonai, Eleyon, Elroi, Elshaddai and Elolam. All of His names points to His holiness, greatness and love. We cannot treat God only as our heavenly Father for that lowers God to the level of our earthly fathers who are far from perfect. We mistreat, abuse, ignore, take for granted, dislike, hate, disrespect, try to manipulate and are embarrassed by our Father God when we treat Him as an earthly dad. He deserves much better than that! God deserves our time, our respect, our attention, our obedience, our faith and trust, our loyalty, our love, our reverential fear, our amazement, our humbleness, our devotion, our commitment, our dedication, our praise and worship and our follow through.

We tend to use a measuring stick to apply to all relationships that we are involved in. We use that stick to determine the measure of worth that we place on a relationship so as to hopefully invest the right amount of time and effort into it. Over time we lose or misplace our measuring stick and allow apathy and carelessness to creep in and mess up our relationships. First we must understand that God is not easily measured and faith is required to fill in the blanks of our own inadequate measuring abilities. We must also keep in mind that, unlike the worldview that we should treat all relationships as a revolving door, our relationship with God the Father is an eternal one. Avoid the pitfalls of distractions, habitual sins, selfishness, personal ambitions, addictions and a worldly mind set.

Dear Abba Father God, forgive me for the way I have mistreated you. Forgive me for acting like a beggar child instead of a child of the Most-High God. Forgive me my selfish views and worries that have caused me to lose sight of others. Forgive me for abusing our relationship by treating my prayer time as just a laundry list of worries for you to handle for me. Clothe me in your righteousness. Saturate me in your wisdom, knowledge and understanding. Guide me into all truths. Reveal your awesome love for me that blows me away. Keep me on your paths and teach me your ways. Hold me in your arms and protect me from me and those who would cause me harm. Help me to see your vision of my destiny that you have for me. Over flow me with the courage and boldness of the Holy Spirit to speak up and allow you to move mightily in my daily life. Thank you for your multitudes of blessings in and on my life and that of my family and friends! Bless you Lord for picking me before time began for a time and place such as this. Amen!
