Love my enemies?

by Chris Umeweni

Each time I try to ignore this message, the Holy Spirit just keeps laying it in my heart and urging me to declare it to my generation. Brethren we are in the last days of which the bible says, "For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned into fables" (2Timothy 4:3,4).

When our lord Jesus Christ walked on earth He left a command: "Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you" (Matthew 5:43,44). Why would Jesus leave such a hard commandment? Beloved, it is not for us to question but to willingly obey. God wouldn't require from us that which won't cost us anything.

Yet many have gone about praying for their human enemies to die; twisting the bible to suit their prayers. One thing we fail to understand is that no matter how we try to bend the bible to suit our immediate needs, we can never break it. The words of Jesus might sound harsh, bitter and hard to obey but the blessing comes in its obedience. In fact, there were times Jesus spoke hard words of which the bible says, "From that time many of His disciples went back and walked no more with him"(John 6:66). So it is also in our generation. Many have walked away from this truth of loving our enemies and have prayed for their human enemies to die.

Beloved, this battle is not against flesh and blood. God has given us every authority over the works of darkness. Therefore, we have the right to bring to nought the unfruitful works of darkness in the life of anyone the devil is using as his agent.

At one time, Jesus rebuked two of His disciples James and John for telling Him to call down fire from heaven to kill His enemies living in a particular village of Samaria (Luke 9:51-56). The most important part that caught my attention was in verse 56 when Jesus said, "For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them". You see, if we keep praying for one another to die, who will remain on earth?

It was during the time of the law that God, due to the wickedness of men's hearts gave the command an eye for eye, a tooth for a tooth. Now Jesus, the fulfillment of the law commands, 'Love'!

The other day in Acts 4, the lives of the apostles were threatened by the rulers. Rather than gather themselves together and pray, "O Lord, strike all the rulers dead", they prayed instead, "And now, Lord behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word." That, my brethren was no coward prayer of 'Kill my enemies'.

The bible has declared that vengeance is of God and He alone will repay. Let's hold God by His Word and begin to obey the Words of Jesus for this world is never our home.

I'm glad I have passed this message. Let Him that has ears hear what the Spirit is saying to the Churches.
