Man - A Creature of Worship

by Jerry Ousley
6/10/2011 / Christian Living

I only did it because I was trying to save work and money. I was doing the wash and we only had a handful of whites. My thought was to just wash them altogether and save on water, detergent, fabric softener and time. I had done it many times before with no ill consequences. So I thought, "Hey what could it hurt?"

This time it bit me. When I took the clothes from the washer to place into the dryer I noticed that the whites had a bluish tint to them. "Maybe it will come out in the dryer," I thought. No such luck. My wife's white underwear now was a shade of blue. A white wash cloth now looked a light colored blue. What had happened was that a new pair of jeans was included in the wash and as they faded they turned the whites from white to light blue. It was the result of trying to do it all complete the wash and save money too. What a cheap skate!

The people of the Greek city of Athens sort of did this same thing. The Greek nation was given to many gods. They had a god for nearly every occasion, season and purpose. Paul had gone there to present the gospel to the Athenians. He went into the famed Areopagus and as he did he noticed statues to every known god. But they didn't want to leave any of the gods out so they had also erected a monument to "The Unknown God." They wanted to be covered. Paul was able to use this to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ to them. Acts 17:22-23 reads, "Then Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus and said, 'Men of Athens, I perceive that in all things you are very religious; for as I was passing through and considering the objects of your worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Therefore, the One whom you worship without knowing, Him I proclaim to you." What a shrewd, observant and cunning fellow Paul was. Only he used these traits for the good. Because no one knew anything about this unknown God Paul was able to tell them about salvation.

Man is a creature of worship. Regardless whether he believes in one God, many gods, false gods, idols, reincarnation or even if he is an atheist, all of these become his mission of worship. You see, even one who doesn't believe there is a God must come up with a theory as to where we came from. He spends his time proving there is no God and this becomes a religion to him.

Because in the beginning when the great God Jehovah created man and placed within him a living soul, man must worship. Over the many centuries of time man has concocted a method of worship. If somehow he didn't know about our wonderful Creator he thought about it and made up his own god. Even though these are false religions still human kind must have something or someone to worship.

That's what's so great about Christianity. It really isn't just another religion. It is more of a way of life. In all other religions there is little in which to take joy. Most have ceremonies, rituals and laws that require great sacrifice from men. Their worship is made up of sacrifice, sometimes self-inflicted pain, and constant living up to laws, requirements, and mandates.

But being a Christian really is the exact opposite. Only in Christianity did the object of worship become a man and pay the sacrifice for the worshippers. Only in Christianity do we sing songs of joy. Only in Christianity can we come to a loving Savior who will forgive all sin, cleanse us, wash us and make us whole. This is what sets it apart.

Come to Jesus today. Worship Him and you will fulfill that longing you find within yourself that makes you a creature of worship.
