Susan Boyle's Phenomenon

Dear God,

You must know who Susan Boyle is ...

At birth,
she was deprived of oxygen,
long enough to cause mild brain damage
and created learning disabilities

School wasn't a refuge,
she became a target for bullies
and was often mocked

But growing in a musical family,
she persisted and found comfort
in song and melody

When she walked onto the stage
of Britain's Got Talent,
a smile of expectant horror
and amusement
came over the three judges' faces

Susan's initial demeanor,
and homely appearance
caused the audience
to be waiting for her
to squawk like a duck

One of the judges even commented,
Boyle's singing
might be like a lobster's noise
when it's being
slowly boyled
alive

Dear God,

At forty seven
Susan Boyle has chosen hope,
not as a naive wish,
but with her eyes
wide open to You

Her humble looks
and overnight stardom
have made me understand better,
that You're never late,
or heartless,
or too busy

You're just waiting for her
to be a willing participant
in making a dream happen.

Although for so many centuries,
we have gotten
the wrong body image
that only beautiful,
young, blond women
can be so successful
thanks to Susan Boyle's
perseverance and determination
I really believe that
there is more than just beauty,
age, looks and size
in a person

Dear Lord,

Through Susan Boyle's phenomenon
You taught me to dream again
and cultivate a love
for imagination
You reminded me
not hurriedly to take offense
or to collapse easily

Today,
with my eyes
wide open to You
I see Your glory,
brilliance and magnificence
in my everyday life

I was in awe
when I heard birds chirp
in the morning

I was in wonderment
when I listened to my offspring's laughter
at their own jokes
and anecdotes
and was in tears of joy
to feel Your benevolence
when in his aphasia condition
I heard my husband start
humming Home on the Range

Today,
simple as I am, my Lord,
I promise You from my heart,
that in all circumstances
in low and troubled times,
I will manifest
Your magnificent grandeur
and find rest
in Your majestic splendor,

Amen.
