Learning To Fly

by Steve Countryman
7/20/2011 / Christian Living

Christians are a lot like eagle chicks. Some will go on and on about their massive wing span and their ability to flap their wings with force. Some will talk about the strength of their talons and hunting prowess. Then there are those Christians who will boast about being super spiritual and how much more they know than anyone else. Some of the chicks will turn on their own "brothers and sisters" pecking them to death. Those who enjoy "pecking" at other Christians' flaws. They end up tearing them down instead of building them up. Envy and jealousy motivates them to use rumors and backstabbing as their weapons of choice. They seek notoriety, position and attention to make themselves feel more important and powerful in their own minds. They even feel threatened by those who have real gifts of the Holy Spirit manifested in their lives.

The facts are simple, put your wings where your beak is. It is in the flying that everyone knows who will and who won't get out of the nest, who will fly and who won't even try. Soaring eagles are a majestic sight as they do so with very little effort and energy while turkeys are a noisy bird that doesn't fly well at all. You can talk about flying all you want, bragging and boasting how good you are but until you actually fly you are just a big mouth turkey. Matthew 21:28-32 28"What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, 'Son, go and work today in the vineyard.' 29" 'I will not,' he answered, but later he changed his mind and went. 30"Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He answered, 'I will, sir,' but he did not go. 31"Which of the two did what his father wanted?" "The first," they answered. Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you. 32For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did. And even after you saw this, you did not repent and believe him.

Intentions do not count as achievements in heaven. Intentions will not get you out of the nest. Intentions will not fill you with the courage that you need to take that leap of faith. Intentions will not provide the wind you need beneath your wings. Peter walked on water because he was the only disciple who was willing to get out of the boat. Peter began to sink when he took his eyes off of Jesus. "One act of faith is worth more than a thousand good intentions." Faith in action will move you out of the nest and into the air flying. Your faith in God and His ability to do what He said He will do will be the wind beneath your wings. Don't blame others for your failures. If you are not growing spiritually then take a look at yourself before you start blaming others. God is a faithful God who is faithful to you and faithful to His Word! Just like the old saying goes "It is hard to soar with the eagles when you are hanging around turkeys." If you are not soaring with the eagles then maybe it's time to quit "hanging" around the turkeys. Find fellow Christians who will challenge you. Who make you think about Jesus and study your Bible. Those true Christian friends who really care about you and your spiritual growth.

We who call Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior are children of The Most High. Children need milk to grow. Christians who are babes in Christ need milk to grow in the knowledge of Jesus, the milk of the Word. The difference between being a child of God and being a son or daughter of God is found in the meat of the Word. It is the difference between being spiritually immature and being spiritually mature, moving on to the meat of the Word. You are known as a son or daughter of God when you live a daily live being led by the Holy Spirit. Romans 8:14-15 14because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father." That is how you know who is mature in Christ is that they are led by the Spirit.
