Got to tell somebody

by Ron Quinlan
8/05/2011 / Christian Living

A long time ago I heard a song by Don Francisco called Got to Tell Somebody. It was the story of Jairus whose daughter had died but was raised from the dead by Jesus. Jesus left telling him to tell nobody what Jesus had done for him. Time after time in the gospel Jesus healed people and told them not to tell anyone but they can't help themselves and tell everyone they know.
Aren't there times we're like that, something good happens to us and we have to tell everyone? If we get a new car or dress or a really good bargain we have to tell everyone, especially if it was a bargain. We want others to share our good fortune. It's the same thing if we read a good book or see a good movie. We want others to have the same experience. How many times have you been in a situation where something good happened and we had to share it?
What about church? Are we so quick to share the good news about church? Do we tell people about the readings or sermon? Do we invite people to church? Do we try to get people to come to special events, missions, prayer meetings or Bible Study?
Do we share books about our faith or films? Do we share music? Are we encouraging others to practice their faith, to get to know Jesus? Do we even think about sharing our faith or are we embarrassed? What will they think?
We live in a world of lost people. The world is focused on everything but God and much of it is sick. Just look at TV. If a show isn't sleazy it's violent or about drugs. Even the so called family shows teach you how to put others down and degrade people. The sad part is that many people don't even realize how sick the world is. They just accept everything as normal.
Many in our world don't really think about God or heaven or trying to go there. They are more concerned with saving money than saving their souls. They live as if this life is all there is. Many of them are hurting and spend their time pursuing relief in all the wrong places. Too many of us come close to this life. Heaven and salvation are things we'll think about later when we're older.
We need to think about Heaven now and why we are here in the first place. Our goal should be to get ourselves into heaven and our families. When we're older may be too late for our kids. It is too easy for them to get lost in this world. Too many have already bought into the value system of this world by the time they begin Fifth Grade. Now is the time to think about Heaven. Now is the time to tell your children about Jesus and your faith. Now is the time to teach them about prayer. Now is the time to pray for them. Pray for your children as early as possible, even before they are born or conceived and keep praying for their protection. Pray everyday of their lives.
We're not only here to lead our families to heaven but our attitude should be to take as many people with us as possible. We should desire to see our friends and relatives in heaven when we die and do whatever we can to make that happen. Don't go alone. If you truly love someone you want them to be in heaven with you.
The hard part is figuring out how to share your faith. The first step would be prayer. Pray for everyone you know and pray for their salvation. Pray for opportunities to share your faith. Pray for guidance and the right words. Be gentle, loving and humble. Look for opportunities to pray with people or invite them to church. Sometimes when nothing else will bring people to a church, a healing service would work. Be persistent and keep inviting everyone you know. If you get turned down keep praying.
The more you pray for people and gently invite them the more likely in the end you will succeed. You may plant the seed and somebody else will come along and be the one to bring them to church. It doesn't matter who does what as long as you tried to bring as many people with you as possible.
Don't come alone. Take as many people with you as possible. Pray and keep pointing people to Jesus.

Jesus, I want to take as many people as possible with me to heaven as possible. Help me to focus on You and not the world. Help me to pray for others and to talk to people about Your love and mercy. Help me to lead people to You. Amen
