A Heart Filled With Compassion

by Ron Quinlan
8/08/2011 / Christian Living

Mark's Gospel tells us in the sixth chapter that Jesus' "heart was moved with pity for them because they were like sheep without a shepherd". This took place just before the feeding of the Five Thousand. Over and over the gospels tell us that Jesus heart was filled with compassion or pity. He looked at people and saw their needs, not just physical but also emotional needs and he had pity on them "and began to teach them many things".
He taught them about a loving Father who loved them so much He waited on the porch for the Prodigal Son. He taught about a Father who called them to come to Him who provided all that was needed. He taught them that they were loved even though they weren't perfect. He showed the Father's love by His miracles, by His willingness to touch them and by His presence. He went out to them, traveling up and down the length of Palestine reaching out to the poor, wounded, the spiritually lost even to the Samaritans.
He still reaches out today to the wounded of our world. He still looks with compassion on the crowd. He sees the lost; those who seek to fill the emptiness of their lives with liquor, drugs, wealth, status, sexual conquests, gambling whatever. He sees the pain of those who are emotionally hurting: those who feel rejected, neglected, ignored, invisible, as if they don't fit in, those who feel unloved.
He sees the young with their strange haircuts, dyed hair, their tattoos, body piercing. He sees the emotionally ill who roam our streets and live in alleys or shelters. He sees those who sit in fine houses and drink themselves into a stupor night after night. He sees those so driven for success that they lost their families. He sees the children who suffer from emotional abandonment or abuse. He sees those so trapped by anger that they just lash out at the world. He sees their victims.
He sees all the pain, all the hunger, all the misery in the world and still looks with compassion. He still looks with pity and wants to teach us many things. He still wants to teach us of the Father and His love for us. He wants to teach us that we don't have to stay wounded. He wants to reach out and bring healing to those who hurt. He wants us to come to Him with all of our emotional pain and suffering so that He may touch us with His love.
He wants us to come to Him believing that He loves us and trusting in His love and goodness. He wants us to yield and really open up to Him, open all the wounded areas of our lives to Him so that He can heal the emotional pain and memories. He wants to free us from all that keeps us from experiencing His love. He wants us to know Him intimately, to know that we have a forever love that can always be relied on.
We have to come to Him asking for this healing in faith. We have to trust Him and be open to His love, to focus on Him, to pray from our hearts. He is waiting. Come, come to Jesus, and come to the Father. Learn what real love is. Learn how loved you are and let His love heal you, free you of all the garbage and emotional pain. Let Him fill the emptiness inside you with His love. Let Him change your life. Come and be free. Come.

I want to know Your love, Lord. I want You to fill the empty space inside me with Your love. I want to be touched by You. I want to be free of all the emotional pain, the anger, the addictions, all the ways I tried to fill the empty spaces inside me. I come to You asking you to come into my heart, cleanse me of all the sin and gunk built up in me. Lead me to confession and heal me. Free me. Amen
