For the Glory of God

by Ron Quinlan
8/09/2011 / Christian Living

Something that was talked about a lot in history was the idea of working for the Glory of God. St. Benedict made it the motto of the Benedictines. Many of the early explorers claimed their missions were for the Glory of God. It was something that people at least gave lip service to for a large part of our history. Now it appears to be a concept whose time has passed.
Living and serving for the glory of God is supposed to be the purpose of our lives. Our lives are supposed to point to Jesus and glorify Him. Every ability that we have that we're so proud of is a gift of God. There is absolutely nothing that we accomplish that we've done on our own. Our song should be How Great Thou Art, not how great I am.
This is a truly counter-cultural idea. Every body seems to be pointing to themselves, bragging about how good they are, acting as if they accomplished everything on their own. This is particularly evident in sports. The ironic part is you hear this kind of talk in team sports more than sports where individuals compete by themselves like track.
We seem to be too concern about self about pushing ourselves above others. Conversations seem to be always about me, me, me. It is always about what I want, what I think, what I feel. God seems to be left out of the equation. Is it any wonder our society is so screwed up?
When this country started, we seemed to think about higher purposes. The Pilgrims and Puritans came to create a land where they could serve and worship God freely. When they survived the first year they didn't talk about what they had accomplished but gave God thanks and glory.
It is interesting to look at the histories of Jamestown and Massachusetts. Jamestown was founded in 1607 by a business seeking profit. Massachusetts and Plymouth were founded by the Pilgrims and Puritans who sought to worship and serve God freely. Plymouth began in 1620. By 1630 Massachusetts was more populated and successful than Virginia despite the harsher weather up north. It makes a difference when God is involved.
We need as individuals to return to the purpose God created us, to give glory to Him. We are called to live for God to serve God not ourselves. If we give God the glory, if we point to Him rather than ourselves He will bless us.
We need to have a mind set that our purpose is to give God the glory, that we want to honor God with our lives. It means more than just giving lip service. It means that we put everything we have into whatever we are attempting. God isn't glorified if we got through the motions and give it 50 %.
There is an awesome movie on DVD, Facing the Giants, produced by Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, Georgia. In it the main character, a high school football coach, challenges his players to give 100%, no less in order to glorify God. Their purpose in playing football was not to win championships or trophies but to glorify God. Their purpose in everything was to glorify God including the classroom and "when you're alone surfing the internet".
We are challenged to live this philosophy, to do everything to the best of our ability for the glory of God. We are challenged only to do those things that glorify God, to watch, read and listen only to things that will glorify God. That is our purpose.
Lord, I want to have a mind set of always, always working for Your glory not mine. Let my words and actions honor You whether I'm in the world or at home. I want to glorify You, not myself. Amen
