God's People

by Ron Quinlan
8/09/2011 / Christian Living

Years ago, I heard former Governor Beasley of S.C. speak at a pro life rally. In less than five minutes he must have uttered the phrase God's people ten times. For example he said God's people must work on changing hearts. The phrases really struck me because where I come from you don't hear politicians saying anything about God's people.
It is an important phrase with a lot of truth in it. Despite what we see in society we are God's people. We belong to God not to society. First and foremost we are God's people not members of a particular nationality, political party, ethnic group or occupation. Our primary allegiance belongs to God.
We need to think about what it means to be God's people. Would God even recognize us as God's people anymore? Do we act like God's people? Does the way we live our lives show that we belong to God rather than the world? If we are truly God's people we are supposed to change the world rather than let the world change us.
For many of us the idea of changing the world sounds impossible. We live in pagan times. Except for the technology we could just as well be living in the days of the Roman Empire at least in terms of morality. We may not worship the emperor or Jupiter but we've replaced them with celebrities, science, technology and profit. How can we even hope to change society? It would be better to hide away in our Christian enclaves.
If you think about it Christianity has already changed the world. A movement started by twelve poor, uneducated men changed the Roman Empire. God's people changed the world then and can change the world now. We are God's people. We have God on our side.
It is through His power that we will succeed not through our power. It is through His methods not our own methods that our success lies. We have to use His method of love. It is through genuinely loving people that we can change their hearts. As Governor Beasley said we have to start by changing hearts before we can change laws.
We need to examine our own lives first and see if our own hearts or lives need changing. Do we let things divide us from working together to accomplish God's purposes? Are we divided by race, national origin, legal status or denomination? Do we see others as part of God's people or only those like us?
Have we compromised God's values in terms of our own lives? Have we bought into all of the things society says are important, the latest fashions, the popular TV shows, games and movies? Or have we really taken a stand for the Lord and refused to accept the trash saturating our society?
How are we doing in our faith lives? Before we can work on changing society we have to be strong in the practice of our faith. God's people need to be nourished by prayer, the reading of scripture and participation in a faith community. We need to know what God is calling us to before we can share this with the rest of society.
We need to be willing to unite with other Christians without compromising our faith so that we can change society. We need to unite around the values we have in common with other Christians rather than the issues that divide us.
We need to be willing to take a stand that is unpopular with society, a stand for life, for family values, for purity and chastity. We cannot let society tell us these things are wrong or impossible. We need to reach out to others in love but we cannot compromise on God's values.
As God's people we are called to love and serve God. We are called to be His hands and reach out in love to a world that is hurting. We are called to tell people about the love and sacrifice of Jesus. This is why we are here, not to get rich, not to be comfortable but to bring God's love to a hurting world. We are here to show the world by our lives that there is a better way.
We are not alone in this. We are God's people. That means we have the help of God. We need to turn to Him, to rely on God's power not our own. We need to trust Him and seek His guidance in prayer. We may feel unworthy or incapable but so did Moses and look what God accomplished through him. What can He accomplish through us?

Lord, thank You for the privilege of being part of God's people. Thank You that we don't have to rely on our own power but can rely on Yours. Use me to accomplish Your will. Amen
