How Big is Your God?

by Ron Quinlan
8/22/2011 / Christian Living

I sometimes wonder if we really believe in the all powerful God who created the Universe or in a god that we created in our minds. In Mark 10:27 and Matthew 19:26 the gospels tell us that "with God all things are possible". But do we really believe that? We certainly don't sound that way.
I read last year of a pro-life leader, Frank Schaeffer, who was quoted as saying that it is impossible to reverse Roe v. Wade. We need instead to work to reduce abortions. How can anything be impossible with God? Doesn't that thought really contradict our belief in the all powerful God who created the Universe? I believe that if it is impossible to reverse Roe v. Wade the reason is that we aren't following God's plan to do so but our own. Maybe instead of working politically we need to be working spiritually for the conversion of our nation.
Nothing is impossible with God. The problem isn't with God but with us. Too often we do things our way not God's. We get involved in politics and try to convince people we are right politically when we need to be out there helping people to learn about God's love. We try to convert people to God with fire and brimstone messages rather than talking about the God of love and mercy. Then we decide some things are impossible.
How often do we hear things are impossible? Modern Society tells us that homosexuals can't change. It is impossible. We're told that teenagers can't abstain from sex. It is impossible. Once some one is sexually active they won't stop. It is impossible. You can't keep teens from drinking. We'll never eliminate drug abuse in this country. We'll never eliminate smoking. We'll never eliminate extramarital sex. We'll never eliminate abortions even if Roe v. Wade was reversed. It is amazing how many things related to morality in this country are considered impossible.
It is funny that we don't look to God to help us solve our problems. Instead we look to scientists. Stem Cell research is supposedly going to provide the cure for everything, Parkinson's, paralysis, maybe even some cancers. We look to science for the cure of HIV and Aids. We look to manufacturers to prevent the spread of Aids and HIV. Yet God has already given us a way to prevent these diseases. Do not commit adultery.
Why are we listening to a society so seeped in sin rather than looking to the God who made us? Why don't we believe that "with God all things are possible" and act that way? Why aren't we looking to God for the solution of our problems? Our money says "In God We Trust" but our actions say otherwise. Maybe we need to spend more time praying for the conversion of our nation than sending email petitions to Congress.
Nothing is impossible with God but the key is with God. We need to start with prayer. We need to seek His will, His plan and work for that. Too often we have our own plans, our own way of doing things. Think about it. Would Roe v. Wade really matter if people were following the Ten Commandments?
Maybe the conversion of this country is an even harder task than reversing Roe v. Wade. But who cares how hard it is? It is not by our efforts alone that we'll accomplish this but "with God". Your job isn't to convert millions of people at one time. Even Billy Graham didn't do that. Our job is to work on one person at a time. Our job is to pray and trust in God. We are not called to be a people of no hope for whom things are impossible. We are called to be a praying people, a people of hope, and a people who trust that with God all things are possible.
This doesn't just apply to societal problems but also to our personal lives. In these terrible economic times it is easy to get discouraged by the headlines about unemployment. But our hope isn't in the government. It isn't in programs or the Want Ads even. Our hope lies in an all powerful God who loves us and promises to provide our needs for who nothing is impossible.

Thank You, Lord, that our hope lies in You, that with You all things are possible. Help us as a people and as individuals to turn to You and put our trust in You. Help us to be a people of prayer and hope. Amen
