Riding November's
chilly crest, a Mallard lays
in rocking stillness
outstretched wings no
longer part
of journeys south
often led season's flight,
raised a family
within the wilderness
of this bay, now to miss
Spring's return, the joy
of swooping delight
lifeless, never forgotten.
