Getting Dirty

by Steve Countryman
10/25/2011 / Christian Living

There are lots of Christians who say that they are hungry for more of Jesus. That they will do whatever it takes to experience more of Jesus in their lives. Then Jesus answers their prayer with a requirement or a demand on their life. Then the question becomes are they truly hungry for more of Jesus or is that just a thing that Christians are supposed to pray for? The Lord shared with me the different types of Christians that say that they are hungry for more of Jesus.

He showed me an open pit mine. The mine was not huge but about 100' across. There was a big dirty grinding machine that was used by the workers to help dig the hole deeper. It is the type of pit mine that once you get in it you will most definitely get dirty! There were people standing around the edge of the pit shoulder to shoulder. No one was in the pit working. The pit mine needs workers. They were all looking at the mine trying to figure out what is needed to be done, who would go into the mine, what would they find and how long would it take. All they knew is that there are treasures awaiting for those who will search for it in the pit mine if they were willing to get dirty.

This is where the difference in Christians who are hungry for Jesus is found. The first group are those who are willing to stand along the top edge of the pit mine and let others do the work as they "advise", criticize and critique the work and effort of others. They think by doing so that they are helping everyone accomplish the goal of extracting the treasures. They will decide how it is to be done and they will dictate who gets what. The next group is trying to figure out if it is worth getting dirty. Is the treasurer worth their effort? Then there those who are willing to go down into the pit mine and do the work once they feel the time is right. Once the kids are grown up and gone, once they decide to move elsewhere, once they get that new job or promotion, once they retire, once they get more training, once they get the permission of their friends or family. So they wait and wait and wait Still there are others who are willing to get into the pit mine and do the work but soon after starting get impatient when they are not immediately rewarded for their efforts, so they give up and leave. Finally there are those who have jumped into the pit mine and are willing to do whatever it takes no matter how long it takes to extract the treasures!

Luke 11:9-10 9"So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 10For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. You will notice in this passage that what Jesus is talking about requires the believer to do something to receive something. It takes effort on the part of the believer to receive from God what He has for you! To extract the treasures of God's blessings you have to be willing to get dirty. To get in and do whatever it takes. Standing around and letting others do the work will not get you your blessings. "Riding the fence" will only cause you to be deceived. Waiting for whatever reason, other than waiting on the Lord, will cause you to miss your opportunity to be blessed. Being impatient will cause you to run ahead of God, get frustrated and miss out on God's blessings for your life. You have to be an obedient, determined, persistent, unyielding and an uncompromising Christian who is willing to get dirty!

Think about all of the areas of your life, personal at home, at work or school, around friends, at church, around others, your likes and dislikes, your habits both good and bad, your time, ALL areas of your life. Now are there any areas that God is not allowed access to? If the answer is "yes" then pray that the Holy Spirit will change you and your heart that will cause you to trust and allow God FULL access to your entire life. That is where He wants to be and where God wants to dwell! When I was praying the other day I changed two words of my prayer. "Our Father who is in heaven, Holy is your name, your Kingdom come, your will be done IN ME as it is in heaven." It all has to do with letting God be God in you. Letting God have His way in you, to you, for you, with you and through you! Allowing the Holy Spirit to change you and mold you into His Holy Temple where He dwells not just where He visits. Those who are truly hungry for Jesus and desire a closer and intimate walk are the ones who are willing to get dirty! Are you ready?!?
