Dutifully Duped

Voting is each American's civic duty. It is our vehicle to freedom of speech, a freedom gifted to us to elect whom we deem worthy to be our precious spokesmen. Each election, we are pushed by the media to get out and vote, to "make your voice heard". The media portrays to us that it is our choice, as citizens, who will lead our country. That seems American enough: our country is governed by the people.

But, unfortunately, our 'right' to vote proves to be a sly mechanism the government has in place not for, but rather against their people. Voting provides a very important distraction for citizens. In the act of voting, we assume we are part of a democratic people. As we vote, we are led to believe that we have a power and a say in our government. We are fed glorified ideas about how we can 'make a difference' with our vote, and we walk around with confidence, believing that we do hold the power. The idea of voting distracts us from questioning anything behind the scenes of our governmental systems. Everything is running smoothly as long as we, the people, have the power through voting, right?

Its no secret that the media is a powerful source, and can influence a population whichever way it desires. What the media does not broadcast about voting, is that you can be tracked based on who you vote for. And not only are we tracked, but if we are voting for a less desirable candidate, we can be possibly marked as a potential domestic terrorist. This is why the media pushes so hard for us to vote, to weed out citizens who may not be favorable to our government's self-destructive path. Cleverly, it would appear that we are a democracy governed through our people's voting, but in truth, we are being watched and marked according to our actions (or even inactions).

Take presidential candidate, Michelle Bachmann. She is being portrayed through the media as a moronic and flighty woman who can't remember which John Wayne was born in her hometown. If you watch her in other video clips, though, you may not recognize her as that woman. She appears to have some smart views, but her opinions and plans may portray a media-unfriendly picture of our society and government. The media holds the power, though, to sway the public's view of Bachmann, potentially keeping her from performing her actual civic duty.

Widely popular FaceBook has its own motives, as well. With its advancements, nearly everybody has joined FaceBook. Its attractive draw as a social network has certainly sufficed its purpose, and with its latest advancement, the RFID-chipping mechanism, we will soon all be infinitely tracked, watched, marked, whatever you want to call it, invaded. How convenient to add this "fun" characteristic to the ever popular FaceBook. And because the media portrays it as getting 'more connected' or 'being on the fast track', we're all signing up without a question. If you read up further on the RFID chip, however, its not as innocent as the media tells. Instead, its one step closer to taking away your right to privacy and freedom.

This day and age, the government's targets as 'potential domestic terrorists' may come as a surprise. The Department of Homeland Security lists these groups (among others) as those who may be seen as a potential terrorist: pro-lifers, those who still believe in the right to bear arms, animal rights activists, environmentalists, those who practice self-sufficiency (stockpiling food, ammo, supplies), Christians, those holding apocalyptic beliefs, homeschoolers, even, shockingly, those attempting to hold to our constitutional rights. Basically, anybody who has a strong belief in anything may be seen as a potential terrorist or threat.

But, since when did believing in the United States Constitution and Bill of Rights become anti-government or conspiratorial? You would think our government would be proud to have citizens who are attempting to uphold our U.S. Constitution. But on the contrary, the government fears their citizens who believe they still have rights. So much so, that they have measures great enough to detain hundreds of thousands of their own people in a matter of minutes with quick-released coils of barbed wire and detainment camps equipped with empty concrete cells. And the media's explanation for this? Well, of course, its the government's way of looking out for their citizens in case of a national emergency, while slyly omitting the civil unrest section of the law. Oh, and the very members of the House and Senate are not allowed to see the details of this particular bill, only those involved in FEMA and the President, himself. Freedom, indeed.

As long as we remain quiet and appeasing to each further step the government takes in dissolving the foundation our first Fathers laid, we will remain 'safe'. But any sense of individuality you hold must be dissolved along with it. Otherwise, the police force, Department of Homeland Security, FEMA, all have the right to detain you for civil unrest. And its up to them to define what this civil unrest may be, not the people you elected. Even peaceful demonstrations or an opinionated bumper sticker, freedoms we once had, are enough to detain you today.

As we forget to question the motives and sources of the information we see, we blindly buy into them. Clearly, there is only one thing we know for sure: nothing is as it seems. Give me liberty or give me death? We may actually have to choose one or other as our government continues to trample along.
