THE VOICE OF AN OLD BAPTIST

by Larry Singer
4/06/2007 / Christian Living

Many years ago, there were some seamen that were returning from a long whaling expedition at sea, they went to a Church in the port where they landed. As they came out of the Church after the service, one said, "We heard a nice sermon, but the skipper had no harpoons on board."

It is a sad truth today that most of our Churches are filled with compromising Preacher and those in those Churches are hearing uncertain sounding sermons. The God-called Preachers that stand in the pulpits have a mandate from God to shoot to kill, but there are no harpoons on board.

The soft-soaping, ear-tickling crowd that fills many pulpits today are afraid to Preach the truth and they have a desire to be politically correct and please those that don't want the truth and will reject it if they hear it.

The sound that many are hearing is simply an echo of some liberal philosopher that has corrupted the minds of a would-be Preacher. That kind of sound will never fill the need of a needy world.

How can we expect the lost to turn to Christ as their Saviour when most Preachers cannot proclaim the authority and the sinless Person of Jesus Christ and Him as the only way to Heaven?

When what we have to offer is no different than the heathen culture of our day, how can we expect the lost sinner to be convicted and turn from their sins?

If there is to be any hope for us today, we must have a sure message and an authority greater than the finite mind of man and the senseless ramblings of the latest so-called theological expert.

Our message must be timeless and changeless. Our Bible must be timeless and changeless. We must be able to stand and say with great confidence, "Thus sayeth the Lord." We must be able to convince the lost that we know in whom we believe.

We have a Mighty God, a Mighty Saviour and a Mighty Bible. Those are the only hope for the Hell-bound sinner. Our example will not get the job done, no matter how noble it may be. Our teaching ability will not get the job done, no matter how masterful it may be.

If our faith and our Preaching is not firmly rooted and grounded in the Bible and the Person of the Bible, Jesus, we are doomed to fail. That is the only thing that will stir a sinful heart to conviction and lead him to repentance.

Let's turn away from the call to let up, the sinner needs to be up-set before he will be set right. Let us fearlessly proclaim the Gospel and put the wicked on the spot. The wicked need to be alarmed and awakened.

It's time to make an issue of sin and point out wrong. Not for meanness sake, but for the sake of good and righteousness. We have whitewashed the blackness of sin for too long, it has now become an acceptable shade of gray.

Our Churches that were once filled with self-denying, committed followers of Christ, are now filled with sophisticated sinners that have no fear of sin or of God and are ready to justify their actions, even if they are directly opposed to God's Word.

It was the awfulness of sin that nailed our Saviour to the cross, He paid sin's full price and the God of Heaven forever stands against and ready to pass Holy judgment upon sin. Our God is a God that has a deep hatred for sin, no matter what form it may be found and no matter in whose life it may be found.

There must be a rumble and a roar from the pulpit against the sin that God hates before the whisper of His love for the sinner will be heard. We must know His judgment before we will appreciate His forgiveness.

The Bible warns us that the end-time will be a perilous time. There is no doubt in this Preacher's mind that we are living in that time now. It is a dangerous time for the soul of men.

Now, more than ever, we must stand and loudly proclaim the message of "Repent or Perish." Now is the time to throw away the silliness of our day and get back to old-time Bible Preaching. That is the only kind of Preaching that will bring sinners to salvation and Revival to our Churches.

The sweet-sounding messages from the pulpit and the lack of conviction in the pew has led to so-called painless births and worthless religious experiences. It has led to extreme worldliness in the Church and rottenness in the hearts of many in the Church.

It's time to decide, will we follow the voice of the old Baptist and walk the old paths of God's holiness or will be follow the wide road of the deluded and deceived compromisers.

Will we return to the old fashioned altars and seek the good way or will we throw away the altar and fall in the trap set for those walking the way of the world.

Just a few reminder verses before we get in to the message:

Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. (Colossians 2:8).

Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my people their transgression... (Isaiah 58:1).

For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle? (1 Corinthians 14:8).

The voice of philosophy, deceit and tradition will spoil you. The uncertain voice will leave you unprepared for the battle. But the loud voice of the old Baptist will turn us toward the Lord.

Let's look at that old voice for a while:

1 - IT WAS A BAPTIST VOICE

In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, (Matthew 3:1).

You can cow down to the TBN crowd if you want to and be ashamed of your Baptist heritage, but I will not. The modern Charismatic crowd got here too late to change the voice and I will not let them change my name.

God gave this voice a name, He said it was the voice of "JOHN THE BAPTIST.!" I'm sorry if that hurts your feeling, but it as not the voice of John the Methodist, John the Catholic or John the Charismatic. It was John the BAPTIST!

This was the voice of a special prophet sent from God to do a special work. As the morning star introduces the new day, John The Baptist introduced the Saviour and prepared the way for Him. He was honored in His grace, he welcomed His victory and proclaimed His glory.

John The Baptist dealt with all sin in all men, the sins of the rich and the poor, the powerful and the feeble, the strong and the dependent, the publican and the soldier, the Pharisee and the Sadducee, the Gentile and the Jew, the king and the beggar.

He Preached without fear or favor, he stood while others wilted and crawled, he feared God and none else.

The Preaching of John The Baptist called for action, if ignored, he sent a deluge of fire. His pointed Preaching condemned the fruitless tree to the furnace.

Many Baptist today claim the name of this Old Prophet, but that old prophet would disavow and denounce them and their stand. He, like Christ, knew his duty and obeyed it publicly.

It was the voice the proclaimed the we are saved forever and cannot loose our salvation. It was the voice of the "Once saved, always saved" Preacher that was sent from God. I'll let you say where the others were sent from.

The Eternally secure Baptist heritage that I stand on today did not come from a man, it came from God and it was proclaimed by the voice of an old Baptist.

It was the voice that proclaimed the authority of this old Book. The modern voices of today have no love or regard for it, but the voice of the old Baptist did and the voice of this old Baptist still does.

I will not deny the Book to justify my experience
I will not deny this Book to justify wrong living
I will not deny this Book to justify my denomination
I will not deny this Book to draw a crowd
I will not deny this Book to keep friends, position or popularity

I thank God that as soon as I was saved, God led me to a Church that had the voice of an old Baptist in the pulpit. It has been a long hard fight, but I have stayed with that voice and I intend to stay with it to the end.

2 - IT WAS A VOICE CALLING FOR REPENTANCE

And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. (Matthew 3:2).

Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance: (Matthew 3:8).

The modern voices of our day have forsaken repentance. They don't want to call sin what it is and sinners what they are. What good is a Saviour if we have no sin to repent of?

It's time the voice from our pulpits called for sinners to repent. Not just feel sorry about it or be sorry that they are caught, but repent of sin and quit it.

There is no change in the lives of most that claim to be saved today because there is no repentance. They lived like Hell before they claim they got saved and they still live like Hell. Only now they sit in the pew and tell the Preacher to tone it down and don't call names or call sin by name.

They want to drink up. shoot up, shack up, act up, speak up, and party up, but they don't want to straiten up, fess up, give up or look up.

Those that repent will be separated from sin. There are too many today that claim to be saved or have religion that live and look too much like the world. They see no problem with being like what they claim they were saved from.

You will never get to the "new creature' place that God wants you to be if you by-pass repentance. The new creature place is where every Christian ought to be:

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. (2 Corinthians 5:17).

That means your talk will be new
Your thoughts will be new
Your dress with be new
Your friends will be new
Your habits will be new
Your desires will be new
Your worship will be new
Everything will be new, that's repentance!

Preacher, are you talking about a perfect, sinless life? NO, I'm talking about a new life! A life that is a result of repentance.

Those that have repented will take a stand against sin. I'm weary of those in the Church that are ready to defend sin and the actions of sinners. A Preacher like the John the Baptist could never Pastor them. They want a nice guy that never mentions or takes a stand against sin and will never expect them to.

I'm sorry if this kind of Preaching hurts your feelings or offends you, that's because you have been listening to the wrong voice. Every Church used to have a voice like this in the Pulpit, but things have changed. Thank God that have not changed here.

This kind of Preaching is all the early Church heard. every where they went it was the same voice shouting at them:

But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance. (Acts 26:20).

God help us to listen to the voice of the Old Baptist!

3 - IT WAS A LOUD VOICE

For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. (Matthew 3:3).

More than once there have been complaints about my loud Preaching. Many don't like it and others don't think it is necessary, but the voice of God's Preachers have always been loud and pointed.

Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet... (Isaiah 58:1).

The wicked have never liked the loud voice of God's Preachers. I am not Preaching to get you to like it, I have a call and a mandate from a Holy God. I'm going to Preach it like He tells me to.

There are too many soft-voice, compromising Preachers in this town, the wicked can go there. There are even some soft, women voices in some pulpits. But as long as I am here there is going to be a loud and long voice of an OLD BAPTIST in this pulpit.

There are plenty of Churches where you can get a soft and short message and be taking a nap by 12:15. But you will not be in a place where you and your family will hear the truth and get what you need to have victory in this wicked world.

We need a voice of warning and a voice that will wake us, not a voice that soothes us and puts us to sleep. Too many are asleep now and while we sleep the Devil is killing us.

4 - IT WAS A LONE VOICE

...The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. (Matthew 3:3).

The old fashioned voice of the Bible-believing, Fundamental Preacher will not be joined my the majority today. The voice of the Old Baptist will be opposed and mocked and even persecuted. It's a voice that the world and the Devil wants silenced.

Where are the voices that used to cry out against sin?
Where are the voices that used to cry out against the movie house?
Where are the voices that used to cry out against gambling and liquor?
Where are the voices that used to cry out against the Sodomites?
Where are the voices that used to cry out against immorality?
Where are the voices that used to cry out against divorce?
Where are the voices that used to cry our against rock music?
Where are the voices that used to cry out against rebellious children?
Where are the voices that used to cry out against laziness and those that refused to work?
Where are the voices that used to cry out against lying and cheating?

9 If they are still around, they are lonely voices. They have to put up with so-called Christian that fold their arms in defiance and roll their eyes in disgust. They have to put up with other so-called Preachers with no courage.

It's a lonely voice that will stand for old fashioned salvation and repentance.
It's a lonely voice that will stand for the King James Bible.
It's a lonely voice that says God has no women Preachers.
It's a lonely voice that says that those without Jesus will go to Hell

It's a lonely voice that says God is always right, regardless of what man may say or think.

It's a rare and lonely voice, but it is the voice of an Old Baptist and we need more of it today!

5 - IT WAS A DIFFERENT VOICE

For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. 4 And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey. (Matthew 3:3-4).

The Preacher with the open shirt and the cross around his neck, standing behind his glass podium, with the TV guide and his golf score in his pocket is not the voice that will make a difference in the lives of people today. It's going to take a different voice.

We need a voice that loves God and hates sin. We need a voice that lifts up right and tears down wrong. We need a voice that leads people away from sin and toward Christ.

We need a voice filled with courage and conviction. We need a voice that will not change, no matter what popular opinion may be.

The cookie-cutter Preachers that are flooding Churches today will not change our society and they will not bring Revival. They will not give hope to our young or comfort to our old. They will not open the windows of Heaven or shut the mouth of the lion.

They may draw a crowd, build a big Church and be liked by everyone, but God is looking for a different voice He can put His hand on, a voice that says, "Prepare ye the way of the Lord and make His paths straight."

The voice of the Old Baptist will not dip his colors.
He will not deny or reject Bible doctrine.
He will not allow compromisers in his pulpit or rock music on his platform.
He will earnestly contend for the faith and will contend with those that try to destroy faith.

This sin-sick and dying world needs a different voice, it needs the voice of an Old Baptist! Church members need to call for a different voice, the voice of an Old Baptist!

6 - IT WAS A VOICE OF AUTHORITY

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? (Matthew 3:7).

The world hates authority, especially Godly and Biblical authority. That is why we see all these multi-headed ministries today. It is a popular thing to call the Preacher by his first name and literally dismiss him as any kind of authority.

The "Who does he think he is" crowd has taken over our Churches and driven out the voice of authority. They don't want the Preacher to tell them anything, just Preach his little sermonette and leave them alone. They'll decide what is right and how they will live and how things ought to be done.

Talk about sin, but not my sin. Don't be specific, Preach in generic terms and use hypothetical terms. Don't criticize me, my life, my children, my friends or my habits. Most people want a pal, not a Biblical Pastor.

That is why many will brag about the fact that their Preacher can't Preach his way out of a wet paper bag, but they think he is a good teacher. There is no power or authority in teaching, God has chosen Preaching to demonstrate His authority.

For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. (1 Corinthians 1:21).

Teaching does not prove that you know God, Preaching does if you are a Preacher and your love for Preaching will prove it if you are a Church member.

Will you pray that this Preacher will not seek the foolishness of the world and what it thinks is wisdom, but that I will seek to be the voice of an Old Baptist?

IT WAS A LOVING AND SOUL-WINNING VOICE

I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire. (Matthew 3:11-12).

He pointed them to Jesus. The person that does not Preach Jesus and does not have a heart to see people saved is not a Preacher that loves. He does not have the voice of an Old Baptist.

Baptist have always been soul-winners. We have always tried to get people saved. Not by experience or association, but by the Gospel. The Gospel-less Preaching that is being done today comes from the generation of vipers, the voice of the Old Baptist is a voice that gives the Gospel to everyone.

I wish I could have the attention of every person in this room. You may not like some of the things you have heard today, but the truth is, you have heard a Preacher that loves you enough to tell you the truth. I want to be obedient to God, but I also want you to know that I love you and I want God's best for you also.

If you are not saved, if you are not 100% sure you would go to Heaven if you died today, I love you and I am here to tell you about a God that Loves you. He loves you so much He sent His Son to die for you.

Why don't you listen to the voice of this Old Baptist and trust Christ today. While God is opening the door of opportunity for you, you ought to be saved today. That's the greatest thing you will ever hear from this Old Baptist.

If you are saved and not right with God, this Old Baptist has a word for you. I love you and God loves you. He is giving you are place and a time for repentance today. Don't turn Him away. Listen to the voice of the Old Baptist.

PRAY!
